Secret State Monitors Protest, Represses Dissent

As social networking becomes a dominant feature of daily life, the secret state is increasingly surveilling electronic media for what it euphemistically calls "actionable intelligence."

Take the case of Elliot Madison. The 41-year-old anarchist was arrested in Pittsburgh September 24 at the height of G20 protests.

1. I do not condone the anarchist philosophy, but I do support the right

to free speech and association. Twitter is used by nearly everyone for nearly every purpose. It was used quite appropriately in Iran to coordinate demonstrations against the government and we all supported that effort. Now an unpopular organization is using that tool and the police intervene. If it is proved that Madison was conspiring to blow something up then stopping that illegal action is appropriate. But if no evidence is found of such a conspiracy, then I hope Madison sues the pants off the police force that stopped him from using the internet for peaceful purposes.
