The Town of South Padre Island has confirmed an outbreak of red tide on its shores. The town announced the red tide outbreak on its website Monday. South Padre Island officials said they are continually sampling the water surrounding the Island and will update the information as it is obtained. According to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department website, red tide is a toxic algae bloom that grows at a very fast rate. Three common signs of a red tide bloom are: discolored water, dead fish and breathing difficulty. Red tide can cause burning eyes and skin irritation in some people as well as coughing, sneezing, and teary eyes. Symptoms are usually temporary and can be lessened through wearing a mask and rinsing affected body parts with fresh water.
