Goodbye, Columbus

Happy, er, Columbus Day Truthseekers!

Remind me, why do we celebrate this again? The invasion and occupation of North America by this Spanish-funded Italian explorer-for-hire? Why not call it ‘Smallpox Day” or “Indigenous Genocide Day?” Bet the (remaining) Native Americans aren’t celebrating today. But it’s a long stretch from Labor Day to Thanksgiving (don’t get me started on that one) so I guess the government workers and bank employees could use a day off.

This is from Columbus’ log book about his “discovery” of America and his first encounter with the “Indians” (but I thought the Vikings . . . . oh, never mind).

“They do not bear arms, and do not know them, for I showed them a sword, they took it by the edge and cut themselves out of ignorance… They would make fine servants… With 50 men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want.” And in 1495, Indians were transported to Spain as slaves, many dying en route. “Let us in the name of the Holy Trinity,” Columbus later wrote, “go on sending all the slaves that can be sold.” Indians were ordered to bring to the Spanish a quota of gold and those who failed had their hands cut off and were left to bleed to death.

Columbus Day. I wonder if someday there’ll be a “Bush Day” celebrating the illegal invasion, occupation, and slaughter of so many Muslims in the Mid East?

Maybe schedule that one for March 22 each year (or the next closest Monday to that date). We could celebrate with “shock and awe” fireworks displays and Springfest street fairs featuring mini-torture booths, complete with car batteries, and burlap hoods. Or, dodge-the-unexploded IED musical chairs for the kids! How about piñatas filled with depleted uranium bullets? Spin the Big Wheel for the No-Bid Contract! Bobbing for carpet bombs? Munch on color-coded cotton candy-o-terror? Pin the electrode on the innocent detainee? Scavenger hunts for nonexistent WMD’s? Visit Cheney’s Tilt-a-Whirla-Waterboard?

Why not? We could use another American-style holiday, right? Time to fire up the grill, raise a hot dog – go buy some of that made-in-China stuff at the BIG SALE, and celebrate Columbus!
