They rode in from Oak Cliff or down the Katy Trail or along other routes.
They stood beside their bicycles to hear City Council members and others talk about making Dallas friendly for more than internal combustion engines.
"We are going to create streets that aren't just for cars – that move people," council member Angela Hunt told the helmeted crowd of 100 or so cyclists gathered Wednesday morning outside City Hall.
She was among five council members who joined a brief, police-escorted ride from Union Station, one that left her colleague Pauline Medrano smiling – and perhaps a bit winded.
"That was the coolest thing to do," she said, beginning her turn at the microphone. "I hadn't been on a bike for a long, long time. Perhaps you could tell."
Organized by the advocacy group Bike Friendly Oak Cliff, as part of its Cyclesomatic bicycle festival, the event was a show of commitment not only for two-wheel transportation, but for changing the ways auto-centric Dallas gets around. For making the city healthier, less congested and more grounded and livable.
