Bill Moyers: Was the Financial Bailout Just a Slick, Friendly Takeover of the Federal Government?

By Bill Moyers, Bill Moyers Journal. Posted October 12, 2009.

Moyers interviews Marcy Kaptur, a hero of Michael Moore's latest documentary and former IMF head Simon Johnson on Wall Street's purchase of our democracy.

The following is excerpted from the transcript of Bill Moyers' interview with Dem Rep. Marcy Kaptur and former head of the IMFSimon Johnson from PBS's Bill Moyers Journal.

Bill Moyers: I sat in a theater packed with passionate moviegoers, every one of them seemingly aghast at the Wall Street skullduggery exposed by Michael Moore in his latest film. It's called 'Capitalism: A Love Story.' Here's an excerpt:

Michael Moore: We're here to get the money back for the American People. Do you think it's too harsh to call what has happened here a coup d'etat? A financial coup d'etat?

Marcy Kaptur: That's, no. Because I think that's what's happened. Um, a financial coup d'etat?

1. I don't know... I mark the day the coup d'etat took place as November 2000
because it's never been the same since then.

You could also mark it the day Ray-Gun took office.

2. Yes it was a takeover, but there was nothing "friendly" about it.

3. We had a world-wide cash flow problem, but the loan should have had stipulations. The movie did a
disservice to the dems, who at least said spend only half now, and still haven't totally spent the last half. Loved the movie, though.

The banksters have behaved badly and continue to do business as usual, but I contend the global crisis was real. Banks had no idea what they had, owed, and still don't know the worth of the assets and only started loaning, because they used the bailout for their balance sheets.

When others may have had positive feelings about the movie's 95% voting their disgust, I'm looking at the corporate takeover of elections, privatized by companies who will have control over our votes, secretly counted and maybe changed, shifted or just plain lost.

4. Part ot the reason for the bailout was to create a fog around the thefts of the DOD
HUD Halliburton KBR and all the contractors and agencies involved in stealing and hiding war money and paying debt such as pay-outs to countries for joining the coalition that helped us invade Iraq.

I believe that 9-11 was not what we were told as far as the 19 skyjackers. It took tons of money to pull this event off through pay-offs. Government records in the WTC were destroyed. Wall street and many players were involved in 'obfuscting' debt and profits.

A defense strategy involving any legal cases that might be filed could be held up or wiped away with claims that records were lost.

Wall street raised a very thick, multo-level curtain around everything.

Many are richer than they ever were and we are sinking. The good news of the afternoon appears to be that we are at the end of the recession but won't see results until 2012.

We are a nation of people who love being lied to and stolen from. Obama has to turn some corners and get back to us.
