Even Swine Flu shows we GenXers no respect.......
from the Toronto Star:

Young Canadians at high risk for H1N1
October 12, 2009

EMILY MATHIEU
STAFF REPORTER

Canadians in their 30s are most susceptible to contracting H1N1, and once admitted to hospital require rapid admittance to critical care and aggressive treatment, according to a new study.

"In the Canadian context we found these were young patients, much younger than we would usually imagine treating flu patients in the ICU," said Dr. Robert Fowler, a critical care physician at Sunnybrook hospital.

The report, Critically Ill Patients With 2009 Influenza A(H1N1) Infection in Canada, included treatment information for 168 critical care patients in Canada infected with H1N1 from April to June of this year. Also released was Critically Ill Patients with 2009 Influenza A(H1N1) in Mexico, a joint effort between critical care specialists in Canada and Mexico. Fowler was the senior author on both studies, published Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

He said the two most "surprising," results in the Canadian study were the relatively low age of patients and the number of patients who required aggressive treatment, including ventilation, signalling the need to properly prepare for the second wave this fall. ...........(more)

1. Hmmm.. Says a lot to debunk the so called "waiting lists" up there eh?
Patients seem to have been admitted and treated immediately. I wonder if the age has anything to do with the fact that older people have developed more immunity to flu viruses over time? I remember having some very nasty ass-kicking flu's when I was younger, and the older I get, the less I seem to get them, about once a year, and sometimes go all year without getting it,and I'm 55.

3. i'm looking forward to getting the vaccine
so i can stop worrying about it. even if H1N1 doesn't live up to the hype, it's still one nasty bug.

5. Just a suggestion, but there a number of strong anti-virals
from mother nature. I always keep oil of Oregano on hand, as well as Elderberry syrup and Zinc with lots of D3 and C.

My daughter had what was probably the SF last week. hard to tell, but she did have a fever of 102 that we watched closely. We do not use fever reducers because your body can take care of itself, so she sweat it out and is doing fine. Went back to school. But we swear by Oil of Oregano. Nano silver is said to help as well.

10. Yes, penicillin
I live in a plague state where there are a few human cases every year.

It's treatable if you catch it soon enough.

9. thanks, i will definitely look into that.
but i get vaccinated every year, and there's a good chance i'm alive because my parents got me the flu shot every year as a kid. have had the flu a couple times, and was seriously ill enough to worry about my life.

i'm glad that your daughter is better.

4. Only the older cohort of boomers might have partial immunity
although one article last week indicated some protection from this year's flu shot.

The last ugly relative of this one was pandemic in 1957.

The problem with this one is that a small minority of people seem to be very susceptible to it, go into respiratory failure, and die rather quickly. It's not killing by secondary infection, this flu itself is doing the killing.

I'm hanging back this year because I had the 1957 flu, I've had my regular flu shot, and I think younger folks, especially pregnant women, need this one more than I do.

Come January, I'll probably go get stuck.
