UNCONFIRMED: Gov. Ahnold Signs Harvey Milk Day, Out-of-State Marriage, and Domestic Violence Bills

While we weren't looking, did Schwarzenegger do something great?

So far we've seen no official confirmation. But considering Alice Kessler from Equality California is plugged into the know, we're gonna trust this tweet:

If true (and again, we have no reason to doubt), this would mean that the special day of significance for Harvey, the rights and benefits recognition (sans the word 'marriage') of out-of-state unions, and a state fund that supports LGBT-specific domestic violence are all now the law of the Golden State land! And yet this is not yet in the news?! Peeps, these are the tangible kind of things for which we march!

Also:

Gov signs Harvey Milk Day, out-of-state marriages bill and domestic violence protection bill. This is huge!

Schwarzenegger also vetoes AB 1185 (Lieu), a simple bill allowing better access to birth certificates for transgender people.

Gov vetoed AB 382 (Ammiano), which would have established protections for LGBT prisoners. Says it's unnecessary. Not according to the stats.

1. I still shake my head about California...
For so many years, people from my state (NH) and others always looked to California for liberal views and laws. I find it disconcerting that my formerly VERY conservative little state now allows gay marriage and California doesn't. It's vey sad.

3. We have an election next year. Let's hope the democrats win!
It's Jerry Brown or Gavin Newsom. We'll see if the state is fixable.

7. still looking but did find this signing statement for out of state marrage
http://gov.ca.gov/pdf/press/2009bills/SB54_Leno_Signing_Message.pdf

To the Members of the California State Senate:
I am signing Senate Bill 54.
Following the passage of Proposition 8, there has been some uncertainty as to how
California should treat same-sex couples that married out-of-state while same-sex
marriage was legal in California. Consistent with the California Supreme Court’s
decision that upheld the validity of those in-state marriages entered into prior to the
passage of Proposition 8, Senate Bill 54 clarifies that California must also recognize as
married couples that legally married in another state during the same period of time in
which same-sex marriage was legal in California.
In addition, Senate Bill 54 also requires that California recognize the union of couples
that marry in states where same-sex marriage is legal. As required by Proposition 8,
California will not recognize such couples as “married.” However, Senate Bill 54 will
provide the same legal protections that would otherwise be available to couples that enter
into civil unions or domestic partnerships out-of-state. In short, this measure honors the
will of the People in enacting Proposition 8 while providing important protections to
those unions legally entered into in other states.
Sincerely,
Arnold Schwarzenegger

9. Unfortunately he vetoed two bills of importance to the GLBT community as well

http://www.lgbtpov.com/2009/10/schwarzenegger-signs-milk-marriage-bills/
However, Schwarzenegger vetoed AB 1185 (Lieu), which Kessler described as “a simple bill allowing better access to birth certificates for transgender people.” He also vetoed AB 382 (Ammiano), which would have established protections for LGBT prisoners, which he said was “unnecessary.”

Both of those were very important. Id say more important than Milk Day...
