I mean, has he even
declared yet? What got me wasn't his initial gaffe, which while tacky is certainly something one could say in public in an attempt at, I guess, glib humor--the sort of humor you can't exhibit if you're trying to occupy the country's bully pulpit. In case you missed it, the delightful quote he gave before a Jewish group yesterday.
"I'm in the private sector and for the first time in my life I'm earning money," Thompson told the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism. "You know that's sort of part of the Jewish tradition and I do not find anything wrong with that."
While that certainly qualifies as "bad enough", the kicker is how he
tried to apoligize for his sorry self (emphasis added to heighten the awe-inspiring sense of stupidity).
"I just want to clarify something because I didn't (by) any means want to infer or imply anything about Jews and finances and things. What I was referring to, ladies and gentlemen, is the accomplishments of the Jewish religion. You've been outstanding business people and I compliment you for that."
You know, it's one thing to say "Gosh, you Jews sure make a lot of money." There's an element of truth in that (altho it's certainly not universally true) and of itself doesn't necessarily mean
money-grubbers like the old stereotype assumed. Still, there are politer ways to say one admires their community's economic success and fulfillment of the American dream.
But it's an entirely different matter to try and clarify that point by implying that raking it in is part of their religion. That kind of moves the matter from a foot-in-mouth moment to a question of
what's really going on in that head of his? No one could possibly be happy with this development, except maybe Joe Biden.
