WASHINGTON HISSY FIT Republicans in Washington are already having a hissy fit over Democrats investigating executive branch corruption and malfeasance only two months into the new Congress. They have already whined comparisons to the Spanish Inquisition and McCarthyism. To compare Inquisitions, let us look back to the Clinton White House and see what Republicans investigated. We had an actual investigation into Socks the cat and 150 hours of hearings on the White House Christmas Card list. We had five investigations into Whitewater and five into the suicide of Vince Foster. There was Travelgate, Filegate and ransacking the White House as they departed. Beyond Bill Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky, these investigations discovered nothing illegal or illicit tied to Bill, Hillary or poor Socks. Besides, if those in the White House have done nothing wrong, they should not fear putting their hand on the Bible and swearing to tell the truth, right?

UPSET CRITICS It seems that the Republican catchphrase of the month is accusing Congress of “micromanaging” the war in Iraq. This is in response to Congress passing a funding bill that calls for a timetable for withdrawing troops. Funny how a little document called The Constitution disagrees with them. Article I, Section 8 specifically says, “Congress shall have power to raise and support Armies, but no Appropriation of Money to that Use shall be for a longer term than two Years; To provide and maintain a Navy; To make Rules for the Government and Regulation of the land and naval Forces.” Funny how Congress, following the Constitution is being called “micromanaging” the war. This is especially funny considering that after four years of corrupt and incompetent management, Republicans and Joe Lieberman are upset about Congress reading the Constitution.
