What is almost completely *unknown* is that in "Tunnel In The Sky" he had a student about to embark on a survival course final exam involving time in the wilderness alone being told by his instructor *not* to take a gun because "it will make you stand and shoot when you really should be running away". And the student who brings a high powered rifle ends up dead..

It's a mistake to confuse an author's own viewpoint with that of their characters.

After thinking about it for most of my life now I'm pretty well convinced that Starship Troopers was written as a subtle dystopia rather than than the utopia most people think Heinlein meant it to be.
