Man, 81, finishes race after borrowing a catheter

Thursday, October 8, 2009

(10-08) 14:24 PDT MINNEAPOLIS, (AP) --

Organizers of the Twin Cities Marathon said they won't disqualify an 81-year-old runner who won his age group after using a borrowed catheter. Jerry Johncock of Shelbyville, Mich., was sidelined at an aid station about 21 miles into Sunday's race because a blood clot prevented him from urinating. The aid station had no catheter, but a spectator stepped forward to offer Johncock a catheter he had in his car.

Aides helped insert the catheter and Johncock went on to finish in a little over 5 hours 22 minutes.

Race officials considered disqualifying Johncock because of a rule against improper assistance. But executive director Virginia Brophy Achman said they decided Johncock didn't break the rule.

She called Johncock "a great role model and example of what you can do as a runner."

I can't imagine that borrowing a spare catheter from some stranger's car trunk should in any way be trusted as hygienic, but regardless, the man did something great whether he won or not. Good for him that he finished with amazing time.

4. Last weekend the Lakefront Marathon in Milwaukee
disqualified the top two women.

The first place on had taken a drink from a water bottle a kid had given her in between stations.

The second was awarded the win until the race directors disqualified her because she had plugged in her ipod late in the race after she decided she was not going to win.

Pretty wimpy rules.

5. He "borrowed" a catheter?
You mean the original owner actually wanted it back? x(

7. I'm going to kick. If you can't support the one older person who tried...
against all odds, then we are all lost.

An 81-year-old person who was competitive deserves a big fucking yahoo smile.

I'm surprised this man didn't get even a small nod.

12. * and * doesn't mean anything. :-)
Still, I'm surprised the older people are silent. Either whine and blech nothing, or say something and affect change.

17. Only if one wants to change the change. If you want to *bring about* change...
then it's "effect change".

As to the awkward question: I thought you had a boyfriend?

18. That was a fast answer.
I disagree. Affect usually is the word one invokes when change is a positive sort of thing. Effect is the word one uses when one "responds" to an idea or thing.

As to the awkwardness, if only you didn't live in Seattle, I would have totally tried to make you mine. I like you. :-)

19. "Effect" as used in the sense of "kick off" or "bring about" is mostly used in legal contexts...
Edited on Thu Oct-08-09 11:33 PM by BlooInBloo
"effect a will", "effect a contract", or something similar.

See also the verb gloss at: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/effect?db=dictionary

EDIT: And I've heard Connecticut is nice. Never been there myself. Tried Seattle?

21. Lots of slush... everyone kind of goes to Vermont or Montreal to ski.
Edited on Thu Oct-08-09 11:54 PM by Gwendolyn
You know I'm just kidding, sort of, but I do like you. :-)

But again, the links you provided refer to the word effect as to some sort of aftermath, not something you can change. Effecting a change in a legal document refers to something already set out. As opposed to affect which implies the future.

Do you ski? The future holds so many possibilities.

You do know I'm kidding. But if I were closer to Seattle, I would affect change. :)

Everyone knows, Gawd and Jesus too, hate snow boarders. That's a fact. :-)

I'm a few hours ahead of you so I'm going schluffs. But it remains true that if you lived on the East Coast, I would have tried, just because I like your brain. :) I would have tried to affect change in a flirty sort of ridiculous way.

25. Nope--sorry. It's "effect" change.
"Affect" is usually a verb, and "effect" is usually a noun, but there are specific situations in which "effect" is a verb and "affect" is a noun. I even have an article that explains this on my Grammar and Usage for the Non-Expert site:
http://www.grammartips.homestead.com/affect.html

To "effect change" means to accomplish change. (And "affect" is a noun when used by psychologists to refer to appropriate emotional responses.)
