Field Poll: Jerry Brown Has Big Lead in Governor's Race

SACRAMENTO, CA (AP) -- Even though Jerry Brown is not an official candidate, a new Field Poll finds California's attorney general has a strong lead in next year's campaign for governor.

Brown, who was governor from the mid-1970s to early 1980s, has yet to enter the race officially. His Democratic rival, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, has been campaigning for months, as have the three Republicans vying for their party's nomination.

The poll released Thursday finds that Brown or Newsom would fare well in a matchup against the Republican candidates.

Two GOP candidates, former eBay chief executive Meg Whitman and former congressman Tom Campbell, are in a virtual tie among their party's voters.

5. OMG! That would be a MOST welcome development!
He took an awful lot of abuse as "Governor Moonbeam" awhile ago, which I thought was unfair and undeserved. Hey, California could do a LOT worse than another round of Governor Brown. As a matter of fact, we already HAVE done worse.
