Re: Keith's comment
His comment was wonderful except for one thing. He kept saying, and this is where he is coming from because of what he is dealing with now, that it is all about "death" - but its about a lot more. It is about quality of life.

If I hadn't been fortunate enough to have insurance for the past couple of years as a graduate assistant at a state university, I would most likely be blind right now. I have had 7 eye surgeries in that time, including 2 detached retinas in my left eye. Thanks to some good laser surgery on retinal tears in my right eye, that hasn't detached, but there is always the possibility. After December I will out of grad school and maybe able to get some adjunct positions, but it does not seem likely that I will be able to afford insurance - unless they were to lower the age for medicare to 55.

3. I think that was a strategical statement - it's the teabaggers and
right wingers who are so terrified of death, and he was using their fear against them. Rational people know there are worse things than death.

Unfortunately, those who really need to hear what he said would never listen to him.

4. Humans have the "suspension of belief" that allows us NOT to dwell on death
until we (or one of our relatives) get(s) sick.
And then that's what health care becomes, basically --
about avoiding death, about postponing death, about
extending our life and allowing us to function until ...
we die.

5. I think it was more about being "for life"
As in we are the real Pro-Life Party..Health Care is ultimately about Life and Death and we stand for Life. Republicans do not...They stand with the Insurance Death Panels..

7. I took that subliminal message away also ....
... that the GOPers better not dare call themselves 'Pro Life' anymore when they don't want to help people STAY alive.

6. Medicare at the very least should be lower to 50 year old - not old by any means
Edited on Thu Oct-08-09 04:19 PM by LaPera
and everyone would have some kind shot at 50....A public option for everyone else, and in time single payer Medicare for all.....If we never stop and keep fighting the republicans and the rich & powerful insurance corporations!

9. And Medicare should be available to the unemployed
regardless of age. I'm 48. I was laid off last year. Got to come back as a contractor to my old job in late July, but no full time employment is available.

8. i agree. i had the same thought as i listened to him.
I saw the show as it aired and then caught most of the replay too. I listened again to see if I might have heard him wrong, because I didn't quite agree that it's about keeping death away. Sometimes it's not about not dying, sometimes it's just about quality of life. I know he didn't/wouldn't disagree with that, but he didn't exactly make that point either.
