What is DU for you?

For some, it is a source of information and high minded discussion that should only be serious and well researched, with lengthy posts and numerous links and citations.

For some, it is a source of mutual support and comfort in the face of the political fucking that too often comes our way for all quarters.

For some, it is a modern day water cooler. A place where a string of letters at the top of a post takes on a personality and become emblematic of the post's author, who a new kind of 'friend".

For some, the water cooler analogy is apt. These are people newly retired or who work from home and want to have that sort of banter that makes us think or laugh or cry or share a hug.

I am sure, for may others, it is something other than what I've just suggested here.

While DU has various fora under which one can post, one really tends to post where one knows the other "regulars". Think of each forum as a sort of electronic "Cheers" and everybody really does know your name.

For me, DU is the water cooler with a touch of a Hyde Park soap box.

I suspect most forums have a handful of belligerent loud-mouths who, when others notice and reflect on it, likely wonder how it is that such people aren't beaten to a bloody pulp in real life for running their huge mouth's in such a hostile, confrontational manner ... and then realize that those types specifically use the medium precisely b/c they want to, but don't, in real life, where there are very real consequences for ugly violence when taking a strident tone w/your fellow man.
