Help Consumers Union/Consumer Reports Get their Pro-Public Option Ad on the air
NOTE: Consumer Reports/Consumers Union has never done this before - put out a TV commercial. They do NOT accept corprat donations OR advertising in their Consumer Reports magazine. The are PRO-Consumer and that's why they're pursuing this. Consumers' rights - NOT corporate profits, are their priority. I sent 'em $5 - I figure any ad from them would have a decent amount of impact because they have a LOT of subscribers to Consumer Reports who are also members of their Consumers Union.

Dear XXXX,

Opponents think you don’t get it. They want to eliminate any new choices in health reform, and let the insurance industry do what they’ve been doing -- charge more for less, deny care to the sick, exhaust us with paperwork and middlemen, and reap profits that make executives rich beyond belief.

Consumers Union and the Action Fund are fighting to get more choice and more affordable coverage. So we put our money where our mouth is, and done something we’ve never done before: Produced a TV commercial that puts the Consumer Reports trusted brand behind common-sense health reform.

Now we need your help to air the ad in those states whose Senators could either kill reform – or take us to victory.

If everyone gives just $5, we can run this TV ad in targeted states and win this fight!

Many Senators say they will push for a new coverage choice that competes with the insurance giants and pressures them to change their ways. This new choice barely lost last week in the Senate Finance Committee, and we want to make sure it’s still an option for consumers, and that coverage is affordable for all hardworking Americans.

We may take some heat for running a TV ad, and some may think we should focus on other consumer issues. But it’s worth it if we can convince Washington to stand up to all those industry lobbyists and give us the health security we deserve.

That means no more denials for preexisting conditions; affordable, decent coverage like Congress gets; no threat of losing our life savings due to medical bills; an alternative to private insurance companies; and stopping the waste, fraud and abuse in our system. It means an emphasis on prevention and quality care, not insurance middlemen and corporate profits.

We may not get every reform needed to make health care better. But that’s not a reason to throw in the towel. Each of us will need health care some day, and we’re the closest we’ve ever been to making things better when that day comes.

We can’t do this without you – thank you for your help!

Sincerely,
Kathy Mitchell
