GE: 10,000 applications for 90 factory jobs
ob seekers filed 10,000 applications over three days with General Electric for 90 openings paying about $27,000 a year building washing machines, General Electric spokeswoman Kim Freeman said Thursday.

GE advertised the jobs Sunday, and began accepting applications and resumes solely via a company website Monday. Wednesday was the deadline, she said.

GE announced last week it would hire additional workers in a new second shift later this fall to assemble Energy Star washing machines in Building 1 at the historic Louisville complex.

Union president Jerry Carney, of IUE-CWA Local 761, representing Appliance Park workers, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

4. Funny how different fields are
In Oceanography, we have done several searches, including 2 in the past year. We rarely get more than 12 applicants. These aren't super-specialized either. I have never in my career (20 years) seen a search with more than 50 applicants.

5. That's what my niece tells me. She just got her MFA from U Iowa's
graduate writer's program, and had this crazy idea about a college/university teachiing position, tenure-track. She can't even find P/T burger-flipper-grade work. I feel awful for her.

6. My wife was an adjunct instructor at a local junior college
until our daughters were born. They would rather bleed through eyes then hire someone full time with benefits.

8. we feel her pain . . .
My husband has taught Psychology and sociology at a community college for 7 years as an adjunct. He worked as a counselor on a grant part time and taught part time, until 2 years ago when the college lost it's grant. He has excellent student evaluations and excellent references but can't get a full time teaching position for anything. Colleges love to hire adjuncts though, low pay and no benefits or security. No standard in quality either but the college education system seems to have become more interested in hiring and paying big bucks to administrators or building show off buildings. After my husband lost his job due to the grant cut, the college said they couldn't afford to keep the program going yet they turned around and built a clock tower in the middle of the campus. I am sure the students were terribly impressed with a clock tower when they realized they lost a whole program. It's a matter of priorities and I am afraid that many colleges have lost sight of this being about the students.

2. no wonder stock prices are going up
whoever is lucky enough to get those jobs will do whatever they have to to keep them. And workers who aren't protected by a union will do even more. Literally risking their lives in many cases, working off the clock, putting up with all kinds of other abuse.

7. Kinda shoots down the forecast that a job could be found in 9 mos of searching...
ON a recent talk show, there was a guest with experience in placing recent college graduates, who predicted this year's college graduates would need about 9 months of intensive searching to find a job.

That sounds optimistic with what we are seeing...

And if I heard her correctly, that would include finding 'a job' --not necessarily a job in the student's major field of study.
