Airports To Screen For Swine Flu

WASHINGTON (CBS13) ―With the holiday season just around the corner, health officials are turning their concerns to travel.

The government says that airport staff across the nation will now screen for people who may have the H1N1 virus.

They've even released a list of guidelines telling passengers what changes to expect.

Travelers may have to pass through a screening device, have their temperature taken, answer questions about their health and could even be quarantined if someone on their flight shows symptoms of H1N1.

1. Oh fuck.
like it doesn't take forever to get through the airport as it is. Like the experience isn't invasive and dehumanizing enough.

Give them an inch and they'll keep taking...

5. This is idiotic. Swine flu is already widespread. The barn door has been
open for months and all the horses done wandered away.

Idiotic.

6. Heck, let's get the anti-vaxxers out to pass out homeopathetic
remedies for anyone found to have the flu. That'll take care of things.

8. Notably, there are no links to any of that information
in the news story. They mention guidelines, but don't offer a source. They say "the government says," but provide no further details. The government doesn't "say" anything. Agencies and individuals do. Lacking any further information, the story is useless.

11. Security at the airport is outsourced to firms that suck
that make huge profits and hire cheap labor who are not unionized.

If they were union they would at least be educated by the union.

This will not go well.

The people are trained and unionized.

22. US used to be like that.
Was thinking the other day: the only employed people I know who still get any real training, initially and on-going through employment years are those who work for various governmental entities. Sad the US businesses don't see the value of keeping people on and continuing to make them even better employees by investing in on-going training.

15. Great, another arbitrary reason to keep you off of the plane.
Don't sneeze or blow your nose in sight of airport security or you might get "quarantined".

19. Ataturk Airport, Istanbul
I flew into Istanbul a few weeks back. They had a video monitor that read the temperature of everyone passing by. They held back an old man and his family. I guess he read hot. But eventually, they let them through.

Though you can bet over here, they'll make sure some Cheney affiliated firm will cash in, while being inept as possible. Take off your shoes - Stick out your tongue.

21. Japan has the same thing but at least they are trained
and professional.

US airport professionalism security system sucks... no shame on who works there but the system
sucks....... I've talked to them in US and other western nations.

A high School diploma is all they need in the US and they get crap training
and can't unionize.

25. Difficult if not impossible to implement
Anyone who is in a hurry (hot and sweaty) to get to their destination could trigger a false positive.

Anyone susceptible to 'hot flashes' could trigger a false positive.

Anyone with a cold and a slight fever (mild, non-lethal virus) could trigger a false positive.

Anyone who has a slightly different metabolism could trigger a false positive.

Anyone who gets nervous in public or anxious about something (innocuous) could trigger a false positive.

Now add these (and other problems) up and what do you get?

Major flight delays and cancellations, angry travelers (more false positives?), inefficiently used resources (TSA personnel), et al.

Edited on Thu Oct-08-09 01:53 PM by juno jones
especially at the beginning. Are we also going to be searching out allergy sufferers and people suffing from sinus and cold issues?

IMO, Fucking TSA people are dumber than rocks and love to throw their uneducated weight around (watched them in action a few times :eyes: ). There will be hell to pay for this, mark my words. Every one with the sniffles will be weeded out. Youbetcha.

I hope y'all feel safe...
