Poll: Brown Has Big Lead In Gov's Race

SACRAMENTO (AP) ― A new Field Poll shows California Attorney General Jerry Brown with a strong lead in next year's race for governor, even before he's declared himself a candidate and despite months of campaigning by his Democratic rival and three Republicans vying for their party's nomination.

The poll released Thursday found that Brown, the former governor, or fellow Democrat Gavin Newsom, the mayor of San Francisco, would fare well against any of the three Republicans.

It found that half of Republican voters had yet to make up their minds in the contest between former eBay chief executive Meg Whitman, former congressman Tom Campbell and state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner.

Among Democrats, Brown has a comfortable 20-point lead over Newsom with a quarter of voters undecided. U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein would trounce either if she opted to get into the race, the poll found.

The poll underscores the struggles of Newsom's campaign. He trailed Brown nearly 7-to-1 in fundraising during the first half of the year, even before Brown announced an exploratory committee last week that will allow him to collect larger campaign donations.

10. I've been a fan since 1992.
I brought a sign to a post-primary Clinton rally with Hillary that read "Clinton in 92, Brown in 96". Got a very disgusted look from Hillary as she was speaking. :)

5. He's better known,
and I think he's more appealing to the moderates and independents than Gavin Newsome.

19. I saw him in San Francisco at that time
there he was in his pin stripe suit and his flashing dark hair. God I was in love with the man! :loveya: Jerry Brown!

He was running for President at that time and I remember back at work my boss said, "He's way ahead of his time." I agreed and said that I was voting for him for President of the United States.

My late father also loved him and the entire Brown family, esp. Pat Brown, Jerry's father and also the former governor of the great state of California!

YES WE CAN once again!

 to Gov. Brown once again! :D :D :D

17. Gawd, I hope he runs. This was a great state when he was Governor before
the Republicans started their campaign to ruin it. I hope Dianne Feinstein stays out of it too, although it would be nice to have another progressive Senator like Barbara Boxer if she quits her Senate seat.

20. I would have loved that!
*cough* first ...

never was a great fan of the BIG DOG. He did a good job as President but I'd take Jerry Brown any day over the likes of him.

Jerry Brown has something called integrity. He can't be bought nor sold has always been my impression of him. A fine good, honest man! Hard to find in politics no matter what the year is!
