Re-up bonuses back, but act soon
Re-up bonuses back, but act soon

The Army has started paying re-enlistment bonuses again.

But soldiers have less than two weeks to make their re-enlistment decisions — because for many of them the bonus amounts will decrease on Oct. 20.

Midnight Oct. 19 is the drop-dead time for re-enlistment in the bonus program, which has been frozen since July. Soldiers who are inclined to re-enlist should take a look at the new rates, which range from $1,300 to $40,000, and determine if they should re-up now or later.

~snip~

For example: If an 11B (infantry sergeant) holding Skill Qualification Identifier V (ranger-parachutist) re-ups for 36 to 47 months by October 20, he will receive $11,000 to $12,000, depending on years of service. If he waits until after Oct. 20, he’ll get $7,800.

If a 15J (OH-58D systems repairer) re-enlists for 36 to 47 months and is classified as tier 7, he will receive a bonus of $4,000 to $5,500 before Oct. 20, and $11,100 after that date.

unhappycamper comment: I got $10,000 for reupping in 1966 for six years as a lowly 31E (Field Radio Repair). And I promptly got my ass sent to Vietnam.

1. Remember the Song?
Re-up and buy a brand new car ,Reup and show how dumb you are...... Forgot the rest. Sorry about your '66 luck. I knew a guy who Re-uped for $6000.00 cash and then deserted, he was 11E/Armor crewman. The Army quit giving it all out at once not too long after that.

2. No, I don't remember that song.
But I did get to see Tet of '68 and was in the invasion of Cambodia in 1970. Needless to say, I did develop a long lasting distaste of anything military.

3. My godson re-upped for 6 years last spring and he is very happy in the Army.
He finished his first 3 years in August and he did a tour in Afghanistan. He too was doing field radio repair but he is now getting training in computers, which was his first choice and next spring he is supposed to go to Germany. In Afghanistan he said he was not allowed to do the job he was trained to do and that the work was given to private contractors.

He loves the Army and after his 6 years he will have 9 in so he may as well go for 20 because then he could retire from the military at age 37. He enlisted at 17 and he knew full well that he would likely be sent to Iraq or Afghanistan. Having known this now young man most of his life I have to say that the military was a good choice for him considering he basically flunked out of high school and was on a track to burger flipping if he could even get his butt out of bed. The Army changed all of that and he also went from being a skinny kid to being a very buff and muscular 21 year old.

4. Great for your Godson. I'm sure there are many people who
still enjoy the military and are proud of their military duty regardless of what people on DU believe.

It's not for everyone, but for many, it's a great way to start.

:patriot:

6. One problem with too many DUers is that if you do not agree with them and support their viewpoints,
then you are a moron. For all of Liberal's supposed open-mindedness I sometimes wonder what life would be like if Liberals had absolute control and could impose their will upon everyone. My guess is that there would be an iron fist under that velvet glove and god or the spaghetti monster help any who do not agree with them.

Since people must volunteer to join the military, it is a choice. I am sure that those who enlist, as well as my godson, are under no illusion that they are joining the Peace Corps and are aware just what they may be called upon to do as part of the military and that they may be sent in harm's way.

5. My son is in his first term in the marines
Edited on Thu Oct-08-09 06:28 AM by pipoman
he is a financial technician and loves it. He believes if he had not enlisted he would be living in his mother's basement eating Cheetos. He wasn't the best high school student but has applied himself under the discipline of the Marines and graduated near the top of his financial training schooling, now is enrolling in an accredited university's accounting program in hopes of going commissioned in 6 years.

7. It's an effective training program
Mis-calculate a Net Present Value formula, and you have to do fifty push-ups. You learn pretty quick in that environment.

Anyway, it sounds like he's in a good career track. Hopefully mostly staying away from nasty places.
