I am usually the first one to bash cops here but I need to thank them
This past week there was a horrific murder here in my community. An 18 year old girl was murdered. Her boyfriend and two of his friends are in jail tonight, accused of killing her. It was an absolutely horrific crime.

http://www.kansascity.com/637/story/1495328.html

Keighley lived for most of her childhood right next door to a very good friend of mine, just a few blocks from where I live. She went to the same elementary school my son attended. He used to work with her. My other son has a good friend who knows one of the boys who is accused of killing her.

So this murder hit close to home. Too close.

As soon as this girl's family realized she was missing, they called the police who immediately began looking for her. They didn't tell the family they had to wait 48 hours. They didn't tell them she was probably just out having a good time and would come home eventually. They immediately began looking for her.

They interviewed her friends. They searched her apartment. They put out bulletins for her car and found it within a few days. A day or so later, they found her body and almost immediately after that, they arrested the three suspects.

Less than a week passed between the time the family called to report Keighley missing and the arrest of the suspects.

So I want to thank the police involved in this investigation and the compassionate way they handled the case and communicated with the family. As sad as this case is, the professionalism of our local cops was most impressive.

1. Police are not universally bad, despite what some here tell you

The problem is that... when they ARE bad, they have the means to hurt people very badly or kill them.

13. I keep reminding people that there are over 800,000 sworn officers in this country.
And the most the cops bashers can come up with are scattered memories spanning long distances and time (sometimes 100 years) periods. It really is as bad as the damned Republicans and their various end of the world beliefs, where they "notice" a lot of earthquakes and storms and "feel like" it's on the rise and then speculate on whether this could be the beginning of the end.

There is a lot to be said for perspective, and you don't have any if you are assembling anecdotal evidence to support a preformed conclusion with a statistics be damned attitude.

4. The biggest problem is, when they are bad their fellow officers are not doing themselves...
justice by standing by them. All to often this happens, and it is understandable, but that makes all cops look bad.

10. Most cops are pros
it is the minority that should have never made it that are a problem... or the few that should turn in their badge since they are no longer fit for duty. It is a hard job...

11. I can't even imagine
It has to be pure hell to tell a family that a loved one has died.

12. It is...
it is pure hell...

I hope the family finds SOME peace... and the professional way the cops handled it might help.

I also mean the SOME part. Family of murder victims are just a little better in the guilt department to the families of those who committed suicide.

19. What?
That doesn't make any sense.

There are some good cops. And there are some bad ones. Just like in any other profession.
