Poll question: Are You a Boomer?
Whether you believe they're politically astute, realistic, generous or that they're cynical, self-centered and greedy, the fact is, the Boomers are still going to have a large say in what happens in this country for years to come. How do you feel about the 80 million strong Boomer generation?

1. Weird poll
I'm a boomer, I'm neither proud nor ashamed of my generation. There are people I adore and people I abhor of the boomer generation. So it is with all generations.

It's the same as the blue state/red state thing. Condemning the people of an entire state because the state went one way or another is silly.

Condemning or praising an entire generation is silly.

But there are equal numbers of generous/greedy in any generation...I happened to be in the first group, and not some wall street yuppie...I'm union, far left, and positive in the fact that Universal Health Care is coming! And neither proud nor ashamed of anybody..cept "W"

But as some above have stated, I believe that we've shined on occasion, and failed utterly at others. And since we're not done yet, the jury is still out. At least for me.....

I was born in 1949 -- but I'm neither proud or ashamed of my generation. Some of the people in my age cohort are some of the coolest people ever. And some are total assholes. Just like in any group.

Since I'm not personally responsible for when I -- or anybody else in my generation -- was born, the notion that I would feel either pride or shame about it is absurd.

24. UAW and C of C are groups you can JOIN or NOT JOIN by personal choice.
Your comparison is ludicrous. Being born -- in whatever year one happens to be born -- is not anyone's personal choice.

Gen X is not totally all alike. Grouping generations into stereotypes does not work for me.
My parents are conservatives and I totally disagree with them on everything. My mother in law is more a liberal to moderate and voted for Obama. Very different, from the same generation.

28. yes born in 1948
I think we tried as a whole to do the right thing and change things for the better based on our past experience. If we failed then blame us.

But i assure you we did what we felt was the right thing even though it may not fly well these days.

Times change . I never invisioned what we have now , no one could but I do feel we did the best we could through the music and what we had to work with to change the tide.

We went through a lot to right the wrongs and I suppose it was not enough yet who has control of the future if they can;t see it ? One can only base what they see and know in a certain time span and I do fell we tried the best we could .

OH one can point to what came out of our generation as being some who sold out , yes many did however many have not so don't discount all of us . I never sold out.

Today, many boomers are part of the BIG problem and have nothing to do with solutions.

Born in "62. I'm in that age range, but I've never lived a boomer life, if there is such a thing.

I don't remember JFK's assassination. I was teething at the time.

I remember Vietnam as happening on TV and in RL to my older brother and his friends. Brother was just out of range on his draft number. A couple of his friends got killed.

I remember watergate as great TV and it's what got me focused on politics.

I remember disco, but was too young to go clubbing.

Drugs didn't appeal. Just wasn't interested.

Free love? When I became sexually active a new mysterious disease began wending its way into our lives. Suddenly, sex couldn't just make you head for the antibiotics, or make you pregnant; it could kill you.

My career has been varied. The longest I've ever worked anywhere was about six years, I think. I don't know what it's like to have a job and be certain that I can stay there and work my way up the corporate ladder. My life has been filled with all kinds of economic upheaval. And yes, I'm tired of it. Genuinely tired of it. There's a lot of me now who just wants tranquility and stability.

I never had kids or a big house in a gated community.

I do identify with and enjoy:

Punk rock: The Clash, early U2, Butthole Surfers, Patti Smith and so on.

A more global, egalitarian perspective: I consider myself a citizen not just of the US, but of the world. That thought warms me more than my immediate economic troubles. I want a world of equals for all genders and all ethnic groups. No more of one group putting itself above others or trying to lower another more disadvantaged group.

The arts: I don't know where I'd be without music, the theatre, the visual arts. They all sooth my soul.

So call me a boomer if you want to for discussion purposes, but don't think for a minute that it means that I've lead a typical boomer life.
