GOP - "FOLDING" - CONCEDING DEFEAT IN HEALTH CARE BATTLE?

BREAKING: Senate GOP Folding Over Health Care Reform

Posted by Erick Erickson
Wednesday, October 7th at 3:39PM EDT

"I am told quite reliably that in a meeting today on Capitol Hill, Republican Senators began to rapidly move toward concessions on health care because they are afraid they cannot hold their members. Some Republicans are now thinking of supporting a government program."

Is the GOP faltering in its battle against health care reform?

By Daniel Tencer
Wednesday, October 7th, 2009 -- 8:13 pm

As news reports come in of one Republican after another suggesting that a government-run public option for health care may not be so bad after all, evidence is beginning to mount that the GOP may be conceding defeat in the health care battle -- or at least preparing itself to make major concessions.

Prominent conservative blogger Erick Erickson raised the alarm on his RedState blog on Wednesday that at least some congressional Republicans may be ready to throw in the towel, and even vote for a compromise that could include a public option.

.......................

The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that "the White House is orchestrating a series of endorsements from Republican leaders around the country.

2. Maybe they see the writing on the wall...
And are clamoring to get on board lest they watch the ship sail away without them!

8. or they smell the death of the GOP and their "jobs" if they don't...
get on board with this....Used to be political suicide to be FOR universal health care... I think that's doing a 180 now...and they see it coming. Once it's in the door, like in Canada, it'll take off and they'll be forever known as the party that was for death, bankruptcy and poverty at the expense of a system that was vaguely once known as "Private Health Insurance" :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

27. That assessment is probably closer to the truth.
"The privileged class never get the point until they're running for their lives."

3. why do we need/want them? they will only make any bill worse.. I dont see
the point in letting them have any input at all. the Supreme Court doesn't "compromise". The right simply wins. 5-4. So why can't the senate do the same, 60-40?

7. Folding what?
They are the MINORITY PARTY for christ's sake. They have nothing to fold. Once again they are simply providing cover for Democrats to come out of this with a crappy pro-insurance bill. Democrats will either get it right or fuck it up. Republicans have essentially nothing to do with it.

9. And that will be their new talking point
"Ah, we knew we didn't have the votes to stop it anyway. The Democrats hold all the power. It's their bill entirely. We never stood a chance." And their mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging idiot constituency will swallow the whole stream of bullshit, pronounce it as delicious as filet mignon, and commence complaining about something else.

What exactly is "bullshit" about that statement? Do you count to 60 in some different way than I do?

15. Review their statements from July and August
And you might draw a different conclusion about what they thought they could achieve and what they were telling the town hall hollerers what was possible from their minority position. Fortunately, nobody in the popular media will have the bad taste to bring up, or even remember, that Republicans were bellowing something totally different just three months ago.

19. Again, so what?
They can bellow until the cows come home. Whatever they "thought they could achieve" didn't give them 41 votes. They are the minority party. They didn't have the votes in July. They didn't have the votes in August. They don't have the votes now. You can try your hardest to make this about Republicans, but Democrats have the power to pass real reform or pass something else or pass nothing at all.

Let's see how this actually pans out. All we have here is a report on a Conservative propaganda outlet. Personally, I never read content in places like that and assume it's true-- I read it and wonder why they want their audience to *think* it's true.

We did change the world last November when we changed its most powerful man into someone reasonable.

"It?s time to Hoist the Black Flag, folks. I hope Ace straightens this one out. If it can?t be straightened out, the Flag of Death is going up over the Republican Party, and figurative throats will have to be figuratively slitted."

Some Senate rethugs might be coming to the conclusion that people in their own states might want health care reform...and many want a public option.

33. I'm suspicious of this.
I suspect this is all show. They'll agree to some kind of fake reform and then put on a big show about how they had no choice and they couldn't stop it. I hope I'm wrong but I'm not going to get excited just yet. (Nothing personal against you, kpete. I have a huge amount of respect for you and the things you post.)

34. It is not folding, caving, or conceding defeat. It's called "Doing their job".
As KO so eloquently put it last night, this is a matter of life and death for the American people, the people every political party is supposed to, in theory, represent.

The only way to fold, cave in, and concede defeat when it comes to health care reform is to not support it, to sabotage it, to block it.

No matter what the end result is, whether it passes, fails, with or without a public option, anyone who stands in the way of real health care reform is folding, caving, and conceding defeat to the Health Insurance Cartel, and failing the American people.
