Breaking News:

Thirty-two people reportedly were killed and more than two dozen injured during a shooting rampage this morning at Virginia Tech, making it the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. The unidentified shooter was among the dead.

This is a devastating American tragedy. We mourn for those who died and our hearts go out to their friends and families.

President Bush spoke solemnly today about the horrifying catastrophy, extending his condolences to the families of those who were killed. It might be worth remembering that while 32 shooting deaths at an American university is indeed a shocking and overwhelming loss, it's just business as usual for the innocent civilians in Iraq who suffer such tragedies on a daily or weekly basis.

We'll talk about it tonight.

Hey, the gun nuts were all over the radio today. Not just the RW radio, either. I heard callers on Ed Schultz's and Randi Rhodes' shows this afternoon saying the students wouldn't have been killed if they'd ALL have been armed. On went on and on about the massacre in a Luby's in Killeen and how a doctor there had to watch her parents die because she'd left her handgun in her car. They were angry, bitter, and hysterical callers.

I'm a little disconcerted about the tragic events of the day, and then to read threads on DU with people getting vicious about arming everyone to the hilt, hearing some callers on the radio today and I think that I must be crazy 'cause I just don't get it. Crazy.

You can never completely stop massacres like VT, but you can make them less likely by requiring "restricted firearm permits" before any gun purchase is ever allowed.
You can own a handgun in Canada, but it requires an very extensive permitting process.
These stupid gun shows where guns are sold with no permit have to stop.
