It was a fundraiser for the SPLC, with a screening of their new teach-for-tolerance film, Viva La Causa ... about Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta and the Farm Workers movement. Besides Dees, Richard Cohen and Dolores Huerta spoke. Dees is a very charming guy, with a lovely soft Southern accent.
I'm glad you're glad to know that the organization exists. The crowd was huge for this event (they had to move it from the History Center to the Cutural Center because of demand for tickets, and it looked to be about 750 people). But let me tell you, in that room of 750 people, my husband and I felt like the young ones--and we're in our late 50s. I mean, this was definitely an older crowd. Maybe it's just because it drew those of us who remembered the great California grape boycott. But I really think that it's the general donor base.
