Associated Press

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Dell Inc. is closing its North Carolina computer manufacturing plant, putting more than 900 people out of work.

The company said Wednesday that 600 workers will be out of a job in November. The remaining 305 employees are expected to lose their jobs in January.

The plant opened in 2005 in Forsyth County. Dell was promised more than $300 million in state and local incentives to open the plant manufacturing desktop computers.

In exchange, the Texas-based company was required to invest $100 million, create 1,700 jobs by September 2010 and maintain those jobs for 10 more years. If those terms weren't met, the company would forfeit the incentive package.

Dell said it would comply with the terms of the incentive agreement.

1. Is that the shortest-lived corp "get" ever?

So, they came here in 2005, and now in 2009, they're gone.

Forsythe county officials sure must be red-faced.

3. Maybe we'll start seeing that giving away millions to poach jobs from
other states isn't doing us any good either. I wonder how much of that money will actually be repaid (I know some was tax breaks and such)

5. The only thing that sucks worse than a Dell computer is Dell tech support.

7. Ouch. That give away (incentive) was a big deal in N.C. at the time.
Right now I think I hear people out in their front yard screaming "I told you so!".
