The corporate media suffers from short attention span...hours of airtime to fill and when a new shiny toy gets tossed at them, they chase it, play with it, chew on it and when they're tired of it, they move along. There's no brighter and shinier toy for them than one that involves sex, celebrity and crime. OJ is a classic case, but we've seen it over and over as the lives of the famous and their libidos are an "entertainment industry" unto themselves and the corporate media, being more interested in entertaining than informing, just can't resist something as juicy as the Letterman story. But it is temporal as surely we'll have another bright shiny toy throw in the next couple days...the Letterman scandal will join the ashheap of so many others.
Inversely, the corporate media fails when it comes to discussing complicated issues. In many ways its because a majority of Americans don't care about the details, just the results. Healthcare, as we've seen, is complicated and the media has always gone for the points that divide rather than are of common ground. Plus as a tool of the capitalistic system, their natural instincts and self interests are in keeping these issues muddled. The longer the "debate" goes on, the more money they make from the various "issue advocacy" groups as well at the insurance companies and other lobbyists.
Today we are fortunate that we are our own news departments. With a large selection of websites and other alternative media sources, many are now chosing to ignore what the corporate media says. Corporate media has dumbed itself down so much it can't help itself any longer.
Cheers...
