He's confirmed that they were interviewing the first "person of interest" at the same time that the second set of shootings were being carried out.

He did not confirm or deny a reporter's conclusion that perhaps when they were going after the "person of interest," (who was of interest because he knew the victims), that they were pursuing the wrong guy. (i.e., the guy who went on to shoot everybody else.)
