Is it now impossible to buy a new TUBE television?
Edited on Mon Oct-05-09 06:41 PM by rvablue
The CC box on my TV won't go away. For some reason it only happens on Sunday night. I've tried everything to make it go away and nothing is working. It's bizarre that on Sunday it sticks and scrolls total gibberish. On other nights, I can make it go with a click of the volume button.

Anyway, taking this to mean the tv is starting to go. And so, I looked at new ones today.

I guess, unless you buy it used, one can't find a regular TV nowadays.

I hate flat screens. Hate the picture. I guess I'm out of luck.

1. And aren't flat screen TV hideously expensive compared to the crt tvs??
I am convinced it's all a scam just to force everyone to toss working older tvs and buy new, more expensive ones.

8. You can get an LCD 27" entry level HDTV for less than $300.
Edited on Mon Oct-05-09 06:52 PM by Statistical
Been a long time since I bought my 27" tube TV but IIRC it was more than $300 and had far crappier picture.

Tube TV require lots of lead and other toxic junk, they are expensive to make, require much more energy to run (which means more emissions by power plant) and have limited size.

Is it any wonder why companies stopped making them?

it's surprising that someone wouldn't want one. But people seem to love old technology they know...

33. Nope
A LCD the same size as a tube is much more efficient. The energy hog rep comes from the fact that someone may have had a 22" tube is now buying a 30" flat screen or larger.

Asking for what you want. Somewhere in your area, there is an older TV sitting in the back end of a garage. Also check the Salvation Army or other thrift shops in your area.

We got an oversize screened TV just about four months ago. $ 25 and it's great. I think it was put together around the time TV's first started coming out without tubes.

Found it in a Salvation Army - and I have no idea if these early "transitional TV's" have some tubes and some newer stuff in combination or not.

3. Newegg doesn't seem to have any mimeograph machines or tube teevees...
So as far as I'm concerned it's not possible. I never would have noticed, had you not pointed it out.

4. Try Craigslist.
In between ads for anonymous sex and child prostitutes, there are usually a handful of posts with people selling their old tube TVs. They might not be in the best condition, but who knows? I got rid of one that was working great on Craigslist about a year ago when I was moving and didn't have the space to bring it along.

6. You have a setting wrong on your cable/satellite box. Nothing wrong with your TV
I had the same exact problem as you are experiencing. Call your cable/satellite provider and have them walk you though it.

16. But I just got the cable.
I was using this particular TV before the digital change over with just rabbit ears.

The black box used to show up and I'd press the volume button and it would go away.

There's nothing under the MENU header on the TV that says anything about CC and I tried to do it through the cable box settings and NADA.

And the weirdest part, as I've mentioned above, is that it only comes on and won't go away on Sunday night....and only after 8 pm.

Sounds unreal. And I agree. It's the weirdest thing and I can't figure out how a TV would know it's Sunday primetime. Maybe it has to do with certain programs being in HD.

17. I think sometimes TVs have a setting
that automatically turns on the CC if the volume is muted ... or below a certain level.

Maybe there is a way now for individual stations to force the CC on? Does it only happen on on station or all of them?

19. On Sunday in particular
it pops up on certain stations and won't go away.

On CBS the black box but it's blank and won't go away. ((This only happens after 8 pm. I can watch 60 Minutes in peace, sans black box, but when the Amazing Race comes on -- there's the black box and it won't budge no matter what I do!

On AMC (Mad Men)it comes up, spews gibberish text, and won't go away.

On a couple of other stations I tested, it pops up but will go away when I press the volume button.

It's bizarre. And it's driving me nuts.

I know, I should read a book instead. But I like TV and don't intend to give it up -- black box or not.

You can try to set TV back to factory default settings. To do this, turn off TV, unplug power cord and while unplugged, hit power on button a few times and leave off for a few minutes. Next while pushing in on the power button, plug TV power cord back in. Hold in on the power on button for about ten seconds, then release and push again to turn it on.
On most electronics this procedure will reset back to factory default settings.

Maybe try that?

If that'd doesn't work .. what brand of TV is it?

22. Believe it or not it doesn't have anything to do with the CC settings
Edited on Tue Oct-06-09 09:04 AM by NNN0LHI
It has to do with the Language settings. For me every evening about 6:00 o'clock the cable provider would change the signal they were sending to me with a different Language code that was not compatible with the default settings my cable box came with and I had the same problems you have.

Took a knowledgeable person at the cable company to help me figure this out. The first couple of "tech" people I talked to didn't know what to do. But finally got one did and after that I have had Ø trouble.

Give your cable company a call(s) and someone there should be able to walk you through it. You can try and figure it out yourself but I wouldn't recommend it. Good luck.

7. Like the previous poster said, you probably have a setting wrong in your cable box.
Just give them a call and tell them what's happening. It'd be a lot less expensive than buying a new television, tube or flatpanel.

In my area, tube TVs seem to be dumped at the end of peoples' driveways with "free" signs on them all the time. A lot of people don't want them anymore, and they can't sell them either.

23. Tube TVs are Energy Hogs...
The tube itself consumes a lot of power and is a dust magnet. Also tube TVs can't handle the demands of digital transmission. Old analog color TV used 256 colors (orange never looked very good), while an LCD or Plasma monitor reproduces 16 million. And the price to make these new TVs keep dropping.

As others have pointed out, seems like your problem isn't with your set but with the box.

To my knowledge there are no factories making glass picture tubes...and personally I'm glad. I far prefer the picture I get on my flat screens...and the quality is getting better and better while the price gets lower.

It's just like those who didn't want to get rid of their horses for that newfangled motorized carriage...

26. I know, I know...
I guess I've just perceived the flat screens as being "fancy" and would be just fine with the old-style TV.

Up until now, I've equated them with granite counter tops and stainless stell appliances and other "fancy" accoutrements that seem so prevalent nowadays that aren't necessary.

But it does make sense after reading some comments that it may be time for the leap if I need a new set. Uses less energy and better digital signal.

28. I'm A Creature Of Habit As Well...
I still perfer a telephone with a wire attached...

A couple years ago...as with any new technology...you were right. Flat screens were high-end items. When I bought my first wide screen in 2005, it set me back $3,000. Today I can find a comprable set for $600. But then my first TI calculator in 1973 that went only to 5 digits cost me $100.

If you're interested in learning about models and what people think...check out the AVS forum. Lots of good stuff on all sorts of electronics:

Best of luck...

24. You hate flat screens? What specifically do you hate?
The only issue I have is that they're so good, they make regular TV programming look as dated as the technology is... You can't put lipstick on a pig.

However, once you get used to it, going back to a regular cathode ray television (tube tv) is horrendously difficult. Perhaps that's my bias.

That and HD programming. MSNBC looks great in high-definition.

27. It's not he "flat screen" as much as the "wide screen" TVs
I've seen some that make the picture look as if it's being stretched horizontally.

If you see one my posts above, I guess I unfairly equated these new TVs with other unecessary upgrades that many people have been so fond of in the past 10 years and thought I could keep it old school....

But, from this thread, I admit, I've been schooled about the pluses of the flat screen.

31. "I've seen some that make the picture look as if it's being stretched horizontally."
That's because whatever tv's you saw that on weren't properly set up. TV shows that aren't wide screen format can be set to default back to a square image. It leaves 2 black bars on the sides of the screen, but loses the stretched look.
