Question about emails
ALmost daily I get emails from banks I don't belong to telling my account will soon be closed if I don't click here or from pay pal and ebay which I have never done business with telling me my accounts have been suspended. Along with the add three inches of manhood now or great stock tips. Par for the course? I've about worn out my delete button.

1. Keep on deleting. I keep getting emails about enlarging my penis. And I don't even have one
of my own, anyway.

2. You need a good SPAM filter
Most of this type of junk goes directly into my SPAM/Trash folder. Good luck.

Cheers

7. I've read that those sending spam
are fairly successful in outsmarting the filters by altering their subject lines to something one would otherwise read easily on the net.

3. I don't get those type of e-mails.
But, my guess is it depends on where you've been on the web. Do they give you account numbers?

6. No, but
they tell me to "click here" to verify your account number (with a bank I've never done business with.)

5. Not sure of what your question is, but ...

These emails start coming in when someone acquires your address.

It may be that you typed it openly on a message board or website. There are programs which 'crawl' the internet, and are instructed to recognize and record email addresses. Said addresses are then sold on a list to scammers and other fraudsters.

Another possibility is that you signed up for something and, in the fine print, agreed to have your information sold to third parties.

In any case, never, never ever comply with emails which claim to be from banks/PayPal/eBay. These are well-known scams. Don't even click on the links, just delete them. If you have serious concerns about whether those emails might be valid, contact the company directly and ask them whether the contents of the email were genuine. Usually, though, it's a phishing scheme.

Your best option is probably to delete the targeted email address and start anew.

9. The bank thing is a "phishing" scam.
They mail them to a long list of people figuring X% have business with Citibank (or whichever) and of those, Y% will follow the link to a phoney web site and plug in personal information about their accounts which the scammers will then use to clean them out.
You can report thiese to the FBI at the IC3 site: http://www.ic3.gov/

12. par for the course
my ISP allows 'blocking' of addresses that spam me, i use it freely, but they keep on coming in. But i have noticed an odd phenomena with them. They seem to slack off over the weekend.

so, i guess spammers take the weekend off now?

13. That's phishing. Do NOT click on those links
and if you do by mistake, do NOT give them any information. A simple "fuck you" in the first box will suffice.

Thieves all over the world have set up lookalike sites to ebay, Pay Pal, and just about every bank and brokerage out there. They make quite a lot of money from gullible people who think the sites are legit and then give them enough information to loot their bank accounts and credit cards at best, and steal your identity at worst.

Send the email to abuse@yourisp.com, using your own email provider in the address. These scammers need to be traced and all their mail blocked by every server in this country.

If you have ever given these people any info, then get in touch with your local police, go over your bank and credit card statements, and get new numbers for both. Then check your credit report to make sure debts aren't being run up by somebody else, using your ID info.

The guideline to avoid this stuff is "don't call me, I'll call you. If you think something from your bank might be legit, GO IN and find out. The same goes for brokerage accounts. If it's Pay Pal or Ebay, spend the money and call them to confirm. DO NOT TRUST E MAIL.
