Boston —
Republicans blocked a move Thursday by three Senate Democrats to pass a resolution urging a boycott of Hyatt Hotels in the wake of a controversy over the hotel chain’s firing of 100 housekeepers.
According to the resolution, filed by Sens. Anthony Galluccio (D-Cambridge), Jack Hart (D-South Boston) and Anthony Petruccelli (D-East Boston), the Senate would recommend that “state department and agencies, city governments and elected officials refrain from using the Hyatt’s services until the housekeeping staff employees are restored to their original employment and work conditions.”
Senate Minority Leader Richard Tisei blasted the proposed resolution, which came up during a Thursday session, arguing that the move would be a precedent-setting intrusion on private industry.
“It’s like throwing ice water on the economy. The message it sends out is so bad,” Tisei told the News Service. “The bottom line is, there are a lot of businesses that are hanging on, just barely hanging on and just barely able to stay in business in this business climate.”
