1. Death toll?
Where? What? Who?

A context is useful for those of us who don't have CNN in our cubes, just a computer which we use to visit DU with.

4. VA tech...check out every other thread on the discussions page!
No snark, just curious...how did you catch MY post, but miss the dozens upon dozens about the massacre at VA Tech?

8. Because I simply go to Latest
and start reading from the top of the page, which means I get the most recent posts first. So a lot of times I'm completely baffled because someone starts a new thread -- all too often someone starts a new thread rather than adding to one already existing, in my opinion -- and the poster assumes that everyone is already up to speed on whatever. Not always the case.

It's not really convenient for me to look at streaming stuff when I should be pretending to work. I can get away with cruising DU for five minutes, or checking my email, but I probably shouldn't have anything with sound on. And in the office suites thing I'm in, no one seems to ever pay any attention to breaking news. I should ask someone what Sept 11 was like here. Maybe everyone here was blissfully unaware of the events of that day until they headed home and turned on a car radio. Or went to turn on the VCR to watch the soap opera they'd recorded and were astonished to see what was happening in NY and DC instead.

Actually, the short answer to your question should have been: because I'm a troll and I live in a dark cave and don't get out often. What I need here is a smiley that conveys "I'm an idiot".

9. You're not an idiot at all!
Seriously, I didn't mean to convey any such thing. I was honestly surprised that with so many threads starting up about this (another one with a near-identical headline as mine was posted at about the same time), that anyone could have missed all the others. I certainly didn't mean to cast any aspersions...I used to work in a cubical farm, so I know where you're coming from.

12. Actually, no offense was taken.
But it is sometimes frustrating when something is posted without context, and it happens a lot.

I've just gotten home from work (part time, I'm off at 2pm Central time) and made a point of asking my college age son if he'd seen any news today and he was aware of the shootings, although he still only knew the 20 person death toll.

I once knew someone whose family had gone off on a camping trip on a Thursday afternoon or Friday morning in November one year. They were off somewhere in a cabin without TV or radio and this is long before the internet. When they came home Monday they learned (and were probably pretty much the last people in the country to hear the news) that President Kennedy had been killed, as had been his alleged assassin, and that day was the day of the funeral. I don't suppose it's possible for anyone in this country to be that far out of the loop these days.

10. same thing here
I had no idea what you were talking about. Just got out of work, listened to iPod on the trip home/no radio, come to DU, see 31 dead.

I thought it was in Baghdad! Instead it's here!

So yes, context. Please.

11. NPR just reported that there were 2 distinct shootings sprees that happened 2 hours apart.
And that people are beginning to question if Police could have responded more quickly.

Gee, Ya Think? :silly:

What the hell is going on?

13. The question they won't touch:
If the first shooting happened before 8:00 in a dorm, WHY did they still have classes??? Why was the campus not in lockdown???

On MSNBC over an hour ago some security expert was being interviewed. He asked this exact question, but the anchor ignored the point and went back to data we have heard over and over.
