WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck off American Samoa on Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The epicenter of the quake was located 120 miles southwest of the remote Pacific island. It struck at a depth of 20.5 miles.
An earthquake of this magnitude is capable of causing a tsunami, although there were no immediate reports of this occurring.

I believe HST (Hawaiian Standard Time) is 5 hours behind EST (Eastern Standard Time)
Thus, 0748 HST = 1248 (12:48 PM) EST

First tsunami wave in Hawaii, if it happens, would occur around 1:11 PM HST = 6:11 PM EST

For further updates, go to http://www.prh.noaa.gov/ptwc/
It may take a little while to reach it; I suspect the traffic there is really heavy right about now.

(edited for correction of time zones - HST is 5 hours behind EST. Thanks, "liberaltrucker")

18. They all have a higher point that should keep you safe
the problem is that most people are attracted by the receding waters and go to get the fish that are left behind.

PSA... if you are at the beach, and you see waters receding... get the hell away and towards high land, the highest the better, and we just had an aftershock.

36. Not all.
Some of the inhabited atolls have maximum elevations below 10 feet above the high tide mark. If the tide is up when the tsunami hits, a 10 foot swell could wipe them clean. There are 4500 people on Funafuti in Tuvalu, ver close to this area, as an example. The highest point on Funafuti is only 15 feet above sea level. When you count in the "piling" effect that tsunamis can create, a 10 foot tsunami could wash over the entire island. And Funafuti is the HIGHEST island in the Tuvalu chain, with over 6000 people spread across the rest of the chain.

49. Keep in mind that tsunamis can be hit and miss.
It's essentially an energy wave propagating through water, and can they can be redirected by the topography of the ocean floor, islands can create "shadows" that protect other islands from destruction, etc. The orientation of the original displacement that caused the tsunami can also greatly impact the type and scale of the destruction. There have been tsunamis that have devastated some islands, while sparing others much closer to their epicenter, simply because they were located in a slightly different direction.

There are supercomputers that can calculate what the tsunami forces are expected to be on each island and I'm sure they're churning away right now to work the damage patterns out.

34. Depends if they are volcanic, continental, or atoll islands. Hawaii is a volcanic chain with high...
... mountains and a very tsunami-educated population. When I lived there the warning system (aside from radios) was air-raid sirens you could not miss unless you were literally deaf, and in that case you certainly could observe your neighbors heading for the hills.

The coral atolls, however, are pretty flat.

38. This is the existing sensor system for the Pacific Ocean. I moved to Hawaii in 1957 ...
... and we certainly had tsunami alerts then. Japan, the US, and the US territories were all well-rigged-up for being able to detect earthquakes and any tsunamis that might be generated from them. It was deeply shocking to me to learn that other countries were not.

An undersea earthquake about 125 miles from Samoa has caused a tsunami that washed over nearby American Samoa. The Pago Harbor area was hard hit, according to a report posted by Kirk Harnack to his Facebook page. The earthquake hit Sept. 29th at 6:48 a.m. local time (1:48 p.m. EDT) and the wave reached Pago Pago around 8:13 a.m. local time (3:13 p.m. EDT).

Harnack, director of international business development for Telos Systems, is vice president of enginnering for South Seas Broadcasting, which owns KKHJ-FM and WVUV-FM in Pago Pago, American Samoa. According to a report posted by Harnack from Joey Cummings, manager of the stations, the Pago Harbor area was hit with a wave 20 feet to 40 feet in height. AC power is out to the stations and is believed to be out at the transmitter site.

“All cars in our building's parking lot are washed out to the harbor. KKHJ-FM and WVUV-FM - our offices, too - are on the 2nd floor of the Pago Plaza building. They're OK. But the ground-mounted generator (landlord provided) is non-operable now,” Cummings wrote.

“Reports of cars, ‘aiga busses’ (private busses) and school busses being washed out to the harbor or to sea. Surely dozens missing and presumed drowned. Dozens if not hundreds of businesses surround Pago Harbor — many of them are now gone,” Cummings continued.

53. Damage in Samoa after tsunami (article, damn)
http://tvnz.co.nz/world-news/damage-in-samoa-after-tsunami-3040121
A powerful 8.3 magnitude earthquake in the Pacific off American Samoa has generated a tsunami in Samoa.

Tony Manson, a TVNZ worker in Samoa, was on the beach when he felt the earthquake. He saw waves breaking before the reef and the sea receding so ran for the hills.

Manson says it took only 30 seconds to get from beach chalets to hills before it completely devastated villages and locals are missing their family members. He says a large fale was completely wiped out and it was a big construction made of concrete

Tvnz.co.nz spoke to local resident Ampe Roma who was in his office in Apia, Samoa when he felt the strong quake. Roma says the quake lasted over five minutes then Apia was evacuated by police and people sent to higher ground inland.

A tsunami watch is in effect for New Zealand, Hawaii, Papua New Guinea and other small Pacific islands. The epicentre of the quake was located 190 km southwest of American Samoa. It struck at a depth of 33 km. An earthquake of this magnitude is capable of causing a tsunami.

Strange. They were on top of the 2004 tsunami and 2005 scare.

Tsunami hits American Samoa

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa – A powerful 8.3-magnitude earthquake struck in the South Pacific between Samoa and American Samoa around dawn Tuesday, sending terrified residents fleeing for higher ground as a tsunami swept ashore, flattening at least one village. There were no immediate reports of fatalities.
The temblor hit at 6:48 a.m. Tuesday (1748 GMT) midway between the two island groups. In Apia, families reported shaking that lasted for up to three minutes. The U.S. Geological Service said the quake struck 20 miles (35 kilometers) below the ocean floor, 120 miles (190 kilometers) from American Samoa and 125 miles (200 kilometers) from Samoa.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a general alert for the South Pacific region, from American Samoa to New Zealand. It said there were indications a tsunami wave could be "destructive" along some coastlines.
New Zealander Graeme Ansell said the beach village of Sau Sau Beach Fale was leveled.
"It was very quick. The whole village has been wiped out," Ansell told National Radio from a hill near Samoa's capital, Apia. "There's not a building standing. We've all clambered up hills, and one of our party has a broken leg. There will be people in a great lot of need 'round here."

A tsunami swept into Pago Pago, capital of American Samoa, shortly after the earthquake, sending sea water surging inland about 100 yards (meters) before receding, leaving some cars stuck in mud.

The staff of the port ran to higher ground, and police soon came by, telling residents to get inland.
In Fagatogo, water reached the waterfront town's meeting field and covered portions of the main highway, which also was plagued by rock slides.
In Samoa, the powerful quake jolted people awake.

"It was pretty strong; it was long and lasted at least two minutes," one resident told local radio.
"It's the strongest I have felt, and we ran outside. You could see all the trees and houses were shaking," he said.
Sulili Dusi told New Zealand's National Radio that "everything dropped on the floor and we thought the house was going to go down as well. Thank God, it didn't." Along with neighbors, they fled to high ground.

She said the tsunami hit the south side of the island, and some "cars have been taken." She did not elaborate, but added "we just thank God no life has been taken yet."

Another resident, Dean Phillips, said the southern coast of Upolu island had been struck by the tsunami.
"The police are sending everybody up to high ground," he said.

Local media said they had reports of some landslides in the Solosolo region of the main Samoan island of Upolu and damage to plantations in the countryside outside Apia.

There were no immediate reports of injury or serious damage from local emergency services, but people reported cracks in some homes and items tossed from shelves.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu issued a tsunami warning for numerous islands in the Pacific, including the Samoas, the Cook Islands, Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand, French Polynesia and Palmyra Island.

The center posted a tsunami watch for Hawaii, Vanuatu, the Marshall Islands, Solomon Island, Johnston Island, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Wake Island, Midway Island and Pitcairn.

In New Zealand, a tsunami alert was issued by national Civil Defense, and the nation's national emergency center was activated.

58. Apparently it struck during rush hour

Samoa was rattled out of sleep at around 7.00am this morning from a major quake that shook for several minutes, leading to a tsunami warning now in force.
There has been no official word out yet of the magnitude of the earthquake, but it was strong enough to push products off supermarket shelves around Apia.
Several people have been calling up the radio stations to report high sea swells hitting the costal (sic) areas of Fagaloa and Siumu on the eastern side of Upolu island and along to the south.
School has been called off for the day with tsunami warnings calling for people to head to higher grounds.
The warning comes at peak hour of the morning with children going to schools and the working community making their way to workplaces. Long streams of cars are jamming the roads and it maybe a while for traffic officers to untangle the road jams.
Several late tremors continue to be felt following the main earthquake

I imagine families are trying to locate each other now.
I hope most are ok.

Add the tsunami in and the need to be on the move because of that.
Best hopes for all there.

74. Tsunami watch has been cancelled for Hawaii (good news!)

While Hawaii appears to have been spared, my heart goes out to the people of American Samoa and others who are affected by the quake/tsunami.

77. But this is not good for American Samoa
A spokeswoman for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center told BNO News that a 13.1 foot (4 meter) tsunami had hit the harbor of Pago Pago on American Samoa, but said she had no information about possible casualties. The first floor of at least one government building in Pago Pago was inundated with water, she added. The Reuters news agency said an unknown number of people had been killed on the island, and New Zealand media reported that at least one entire village was "flattened" by the tsunami.

"Based on all available data a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter," a bulletin from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center read. A tsunami watch was earlier in effect for Hawaii, but was later downgraded to an advisory.

A witness told Radio New Zealand that villages on the south-east coast of Samoa's Upolu had been flattened by the earthquake and that police were moving people to higher ground. It also said that a 10 foot (3 meter) tsunami struck its coast, a spokeswoman for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center was not immediately able to confirm that.

Shaking near the epicenter reportedly lasted up to three minutes.

A number of aftershocks also hit the area after the initial earthquake. "We are seeing a lot of activity in the area," a spokesman for the United States Geological Survey said, who also warned that more stronger aftershocks should be expected. So far, three moderate earthquakes have been recorded with preliminary magnitudes of 5.6, 5.6 and 5.8.

and to be on watch.

They said it is so early and remote where it did strike that the reports are just now trickling in.
