PSCPA: 19-year-old confesses to duct-taping cat
Edited on Mon Sep-28-09 10:09 AM by RamboLiberal
"Sticky" still doesn't have a home, but she's closer to getting justice for being body-wrapped in duct-tape and abandoned last week.
Saturday evening, following a tip, Pennsylvania SPCA law enforcement officers arrested James Davis, 19, of the 2100 block of 22d Street in North Philadelphia, according to the Pennsylvania SPCA.

Contrary to other reports, Davis did not turn himself in, said George Bengal, the nonprofit's director of law enforcement.

Davis admitted to impulsively taping up the cat after seeing it in the yard of the home where he lives with his parents, Bengal said.

Davis left the cat in his yard for a couple of hours, then, because the animal kept screaming, tossed it into a neighbor's yard, where at least 12 hours passed before she was noticed and authorities were contacted, Bengal said.

Quoted from the article:

Several people have come forward claiming to own "Sticky," as the cat was nicknamed by workers at the PSCPA in North Philadelphia.

But no one has been able to prove ownership so far, About 100 people have offered to adopt the cat, and those requests are being considered in the order they came in, the PSPCA statement said.

I hope they removed it with the poor animal under a general anesthetic.

How sick!

31. The article says the cat was sedated, which is somewhat less costly than anesthesia.
Of course, the cost should come out of the hide of the creep who did this, or his family, since he's a teenager.

38. Yeah, I checked, you're right.
If I found my cat similarly taped, I'd hope they would anesthetize if there was a chance of pain.

When I stop to think more deeply about the logistic, it seems anesthesia is a type of sedation, whereas sedation is not necessarily anesthesia. I remember being fooled that way once by a doc. Said I'd be sedated, and I thought that meant no memory and no pain. Not true in either case, though it's possible the pain may have been reduced.

So its entirely possible the cat did feel some pain during removal, since she might have been conscious. It probably depends upon what, precisely, they did for sedation, and whether there was anyway to soften the adhesive. They may have just cut the hair, in which case the cat may not have felt pain.

Lots of folks, were they to find their own cat similarly taped, might not have the financial luxury of taking it to the vet for such a procedure.

I guess I'd call for this guy to have some kind of responsibility, but the severe sanctions some others are calling for in this thread are far over the top, as he could have done worse to the cat. Charging him, not his parents, seems like a reasonable thing, and if he can't afford it, then let him work it off in a way that increases his empathy for animals. (I was thinking of cleaning up kennels, but realized that would just make him think of "filthy animals", which may be a truism, but might cause increased resentment toward them instead of increased positive feelings)

29. I'll be taking adoption counseling training at the PSPCA next week
I start volunteering at the PSPCA next Tuesday, after I get my car worked on and pick up my cat spoiling kit. I chose to volunteer because I want to be a part of the solution to end animal cruelty, not just get pissed off at people abusing animals without doing anything about it.

I'll see to it that Sticky gets a loving home where she'll be spoiled rotten, just like I spoil Max and Ruby. I love cats and will watch prospective adopters like a mother cat watches her kittens. She will get a great home--and God willing, I'll have a say about Sticky. People who want to adopt a (rehabbed) abused animal have to go through a rigorous background check, replete with vet, personal, and other references. They don't fool around there.

As for that waste of human DNA who duct taped that poor kitty, I'd like to see him 302'd (Pennsylvania term for being committed to a mental institution), if not prosecuted as a felon. This kid is a real sicko who needs either professional help or purr-manent banishment from society, depending on the results of his psych eval.

39. Nope, it's three factors.
Edited on Mon Sep-28-09 02:14 PM by BreweryYardRat
1. The national population has increased drastically, so there are more sickos like this than in the past generation or two.

2. The national dialectic has moved towards recognizing this behavior as WRONG, so people pay more attention to it when it happens.

3. Morbid shit like this gets ratings/sells papers, so the media gives such incidents lots of coverage.

The only problem is that when they're hungry you'd best be quick....
