Obama follows Bush’s modus operandi on Iran
In a manner chillingly reminiscent of the Bush administration’s buildup to the Iraq war, top White House officials yesterday intensified the US propaganda offensive against Iran, threatening heavy sanctions if Tehran does not provide unrestricted access to its newly revealed uranium enrichment plant near the city of Qom and other nuclear facilities and personnel.

Interviewed on separate Sunday television programs, Defence Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton both painted the Qom revelations in the most sinister terms. If the “illicit nuclear facility” had been for peaceful nuclear purposes, Gates declared, “there’s no reason to put it so deep underground, no reason to be deceptive about it, keep it a… secret for a protracted period of time.”

That theme has been endlessly recycled in the US media over the past few days to cultivate a climate of fear and justify further punitive actions against Iran. The incomplete Qom plant is not “illicit,” however, as countries are obliged to provide details under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty only when facilities become operational. Moreover, given repeated US and Israeli threats of military action, it is hardly surprising that the Qom plant, like its far larger counterpart at Natanz, is being built underground.

The furor surrounding the Qom facility is part of a carefully orchestrated US campaign leading up to the meeting on Thursday between the P5+1 powers—the US, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China—and Iran. In the lead-up to last week’s UN meeting, the US received support from Russia for sanctions as a quid pro quo for ending its missile shield plans in Eastern Europe. Obama chaired the UN Security Council meeting that adopted a nuclear non-proliferation resolution that sets the stage for punitive measures against alleged “violators” such as Iran...

The new initiative explains the new propoganda flurry, e.g. the "new" story about the somali girl who was stoned by "radical muslims" - except it was last year.

18. And what we did to the People of Iraq does not warrant the least bit of COMPASSION.
Edited on Mon Sep-28-09 08:17 AM by ShortnFiery
Knowing that sanctions on Iran will harm ONLY THE POOR. We don't care that OUR sanctions on Iraq during the 1990s essentially killed 500,000 children?

We're going to INTELLECTUALLY warmonger our species out of existence due to "duping the masses" for the greed of the ruling elite.

Such Logic is INSANE!
No compassion - no emotion = Just THREATS and BLUNT force? :(

31. Yes, we are doing EXACTLY that. Haven't you been paying attention to the rhetoric?
Yes, first we'll do sanction that will serve to squelch the "reformers" and everyone in Iran will be Nationalistic ... sort of like many of us are morphing into right now within the USA.

Our whorish media has already started the drumbeat to war.

A lot of people are going to SENSELESSLY die unless we MAKE our leaders become more transparent.

This is about geopolitical positioning and replacing Iran's present leadership with some figurehead who will DE-nationalize the oil.

It's about corporate profits and leverage.

Yet far too many Americans are going to send their sons and daughter over to the ME to DIE for multinational corporations.

It's VILE.

21. well, that's alright then. quite different matters, quite. i mean, anyone who doesn't
see that bush's warnings to iran - i mean iraq - i mean oceania - were of a whole different order than obama's warnings to east asia, is just a nut, & very possibly mentally ill.

not to mention a loner & loser with cooties who lives in his mother's basement. (rolly eye icon)

just sparing you the trouble of your next 10 posts.

10. The only change in the Military Industrial Complex apparatus is President Obama.
How damn gullible are the American People?

If we let the ruling elite lie us into another attack ...

May God have mercy on our bloodthirsty souls because it will truly open "The Gates of Hell."

We will lose all our civil liberties and reside within a corporate police state.

WAKE UP CALI, et. al. !!!

9. And Boooshie Used Diplomacy How???
Yep...total bullshit.

Yesterday Fareed Zakaria did an excellent rundown on what's going on with Iran and how things have changed since President Obama took office. He's had to rebuild a lot of broken relationships thanks to the boooosh regime that are needed if we're going to get our troops out of that region and to prevent things from going further to hell. He's eased tensions with Russia that has brought them on board in putting pressure on Iran to open up their facilities to inspection. booooosh did all he could to alienate both countries that led to Russia quietly helping Iran build up their nuke program. This sure isn't their posture now.

If Iran signed the Nuclearn Non-Proliferation treaty and was building secret facilities, they are in violation of the treaty...pretty cut and dried to me. President Obama called their bluff and did so with a far stronger diplomatic hand than this country has had in the past 8 years.
