Cheney says Democrats will back down
Deadlocked with Congress over Iraq, President Bush begins the week with a message that some good might come from sitting down with his Democratic adversaries. His vice president's view is more antagonistic: Democrats will ultimately cave.

Vice President Dick Cheney says he is "willing to bet" that Democratic lawmakers will back down and approve a war-spending bill that doesn't call for U.S. troops to leave Iraq. Top Democratic leaders shot back that Cheney has lost all public credibility.

In an interview broadcast Sunday, Cheney predicted Congress will end up passing a "clean" bill that funds the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan without any troop withdrawal timetables. Democrats do not appear to have the votes to override a presidential veto.

Uh oh, now that Dick Cheney said it, it looks like Democrats won't back down.

Why?

Cheney has yet to be right about anything, that's why.

8. So tell me the difference

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) - If President Bush vetoes an Iraq war spending bill as promised, Congress quickly will provide the money without the withdrawal timeline the White House objects to because no lawmaker ``wants to play chicken with our troops,'' Sen. Barack Obama said Sunday.

And this from the OP:
Vice President Dick Cheney says he is "willing to bet" that Democratic lawmakers will back down and approve a war-spending bill that doesn't call for U.S. troops to leave Iraq. Top Democratic leaders shot back that Cheney has lost all public credibility.

In an interview broadcast Sunday, Cheney predicted Congress will end up passing a "clean" bill that funds the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan without any troop withdrawal timetables. Democrats do not appear to have the votes to override a presidential veto.

My reading of the two statements is that both Obama and Cheney say the Democrats will pass a bill to fund the occupation without a time table for withdrawing our troops. Do you read the 2 statements to be materially different?

10. The Obama quote doesn't appear to say anything, really
Although the reporter's gloss on it makes the snippet of a quote about not playing chicken with the troops look like . . . well, I don't know what it looks like. It looks like a snippet of a quote being made to stand up and try to be an approximation of Cheney's babbling. But it kind of fails.

What is the full context of the Obama quote? What was the question he was answering? What did he say both before and after those seven quoted words? Find out the answers to these questions, and you might find out what the difference between what Obama and Cheney are saying or trying to say. I know it's a real stretch, but it's just possible that the major media may not be telling the full story, or may be trimming the full story to fit their own pretext.

13. I posted a link to the story. Obama said it quite awhile before Cheney said it
it, so the paper would have had to be clarvoient to attempt to make it look like what Cheney would say a week or more afterwords.

It was widely reported, that Obama said the Dems would pass an occupation funding bill without a time line for withdrawing the troops.

It appears that Cheney agrees with Obama that the Dems will pass an Iraq funding bill without a timetable for withdrawing the troops, and said materially the same thing as Obama did.

2. Cheney know what he's doing
He's throwing out a challenge, baiting a trap.

And Democrats are taking the bait.

No funding? Then take away armor and ammo, and spin it like it's the Democrats' fault. Extra deaths? Democrats' fault.

It doesn't seem like the voting public would buy anything so obvious, but who knows.

3. If the Democrats cave now than they risk losing the Majority and
possibly the White House in 2008..
The Republicans want the Democrats to take responibilty of this war..The goal of this President is to pass this war on.So if this bill was signed today, with the timeline dates, it has already become a problem for the Democrrats to solve...The Republicans are just buying time.

5. I suggested to a Republican friend that if the Dems cut the Iraq funding
then Bush would hang the troops out to dry and blame the Democrats. He said I was talking out of my ass, but would he recognize it if it happens?

12. Cheney doesn't know shit.
The only things that come out his mouth are empty platitudes, jingoistic slogans, lies, and mornic political analysis that ends up being all the way wrong.

4. It's still important for Dems to force bush to veto the bill. I think
blaming that on the Democrats will backfire on his ass.

I am reminded of the time the Republican Congress forced a showdown with Clinton that resulted in the gov't being shut down for a week or two. It backfired on the Repubs and THEY had to back down and eat their words.

6. Forget what Cheney says and how to interpret it--just do what is right.
That is simple. No matter what Cheney's statement actually means or what his intention is, as a Democrat I would prefer to have a backbone and to have the courage of my convictions than to try and second guess what a weasel like Cheney says.

9. it's all about that timeline withdrawal date, the neo cons want their
continuous war for their greedy and insane reasons, the Dems better stand strong and just say NO it will not be taken out, only the troops should have a timely withdrawal date. I am just waiting for someone to tell the American people we are dealing with some sick sick bastards.

15. I think many know this
I think that many know that the neocons want a war and that we are dealing with some very sick people who are willing to extend the war until January, 2009 for political reasons. I think that the Democrats will stand up to the administration.

11. Cheney wants to make it a Mexican Standoff!!
That way, they can just hand it off in January 2009 and then claim some sort of divine foresight when successors clean up this unprecedented disaster.

Dickwit's record on what he 'thinks' and what he 'knows' hasn't proven him to be correct so far.

14. I don't know if the Dem leaders have the fortitude to stare down bush on Iraq.
If Bush vetoes the bill, I suspect many middle-of-the-road types in the party will demand a bill with no strings attached.
