Another day, another young, attractive female teacher arrested for having sex with an underage boy. This time, the fun comes to us from a Catholic high school in Tucson, Arizona.

Rebecca Kelley, 24, appeared in justice court with her attorney Stephen Weiss Friday. She pleaded not guilty to 4 counts of sexual conduct with a minor. The incident allegedly took place throughout January of this year.

"There's no question that it was consensual," says Weiss. "No question at all. Consent doesn't make any difference. If it is consensual it's still a crime under that statute."

"I feel sorry for her," says Reverend Fred Tillotson, head of Salpointe High School. "I feel sorry for her because here was a young lady who had potential as a teacher. We've hired her because she was a good English teacher, and the kids did well with her. Probably this will ruin her career."

One report in the Tuscon Citizen had the cops hauling away DNA samples from a variety of surfaces in Kelley's home. Court records indicate that "biological evidence" taken from her home during a recent search includes "samples" from a love seat, from a couch and a rug in a living room, and samples from a bedroom floor and a mattress in a bedroom.

Kelley provided a DNA sample in the form of cells from inside her cheeks, according to those records. At the high school, police searched a locked four-drawer filing cabinet for evidence in the case.

*** - These teacher-student sex stories are becoming so common that I've come to the conclusion that in the future these "practices" will become accepted, and then slowly absorbed into our social customs and mores. Parents and students of the future will include "teacher hotness" among the criteria that they use to select schools:

Parent: So tell me about the qualifications of your teachers.

Principal: Oh, well, we have some of the best and brightest teachers the city has to offer. All of our teachers have Master's degrees. Many could be teaching in college. And quite a few have written papers for scholarly journals.

Parent: Yeah, okay. And who would be my son's teacher? What are her vital statistics?

Principal: {fumbles for papers on her desk} Let's see now.... Ms. Perkins, 5'4" 120 lbs., 34-29-36. A real looker. She likes strolling on the beach at sunset, her hobbies are needle point and origami. She prefers boys but doesn't object to an occassional lesbian tryst. She likes them blonde and submissive. No jocks, but also no whiners.

Parent: Yeah well, I don't know about that lesbian gay stuff. We're fundamentalists. What else do you have?????

5. The "looks" of the teacher is not important, but this trend is.

Why are all of these young women being drawn to underage boys? It seems too pat to just say, "they are pedophiles", and leave it at that. If that were all there was to it, then we need to be concerned at the sudden soaring statistic of female predators! But I don't buy that. There is something else at play, here, and we as a society need to get to the bottom of it. (None of the previous sentence was intended as humor). Has this kind of thing always gone on, but just completely unreported? I know of no instance from my (stone-aged) school days where this kind of thing was even rumored. There was a lot of teen-aged, boy-talk about this or that hot teacher, but nothing else. Does anyone have any insight into this phenomenon?

A teacher would probably have a lot more control and influence over the student then they would have over someone their own age.

7. You may be right. But, man, that is sad.

All of these teachers are in their early to middle twenties - they aren't much more than "kids" themselves. What is happening to our society where so many young, educated, intelligent women feel they have to turn to teenage boys for companionship and sex? There are just too many of these cases turning up recently for this not to be some sort of serious aberration. These young women are the products of our society and we need to understand what is going on here - the sooner the better.

"Of course, female teachers (like any adult in a position of care, trust and responsibility) can harm those we designate as under age. But there needs to be a distinction between a professional boundary violation and a sex crime. Then there's the problem of slippage between "child," "adolescent," "preteen," and "mature older teens above 16" that enables police, school administrators and child protection workers to step in where they are not always needed (or wanted).

In Notes On A Scandal, a film portraying a fictional incident of teacher-student sex, it's not a child at risk that crystallizes the scandal so much as adult jealousy and erotic intrigue. Who didn't wonder what Cate Blanchett would wear to the Oscars when nominated for her debut as a teacher caught up in a sex scandal? How many adult fantasies about high school teachers were ignited? Perhaps it's time to own up to our fascination rather than criminalizing teachers.

Also, it's probably worth noting that in the last couple of years there've been two or three stories like this in the Houston area alone, but they didn't make the national news because it was a male teacher and a female student. It's appalling, but what we hear about is a function of selective reporting by sensationalistic news media.
