'sleeping with' vs 'having sex with'

sex is out there in the media plain as day.

so why is the act of sex referred to as 'sleeping with' instead of 'having sex with'?

on the talk shows, celebrity gossip, etc. they say 'sleeping with'. so and so has slept with x number of partners and so on.

you can see porn, talk about porn.

but when talking about a person or couple it stays to 'sleeping with' and not 'having sex with'.

I find myself yelling at the TV 'they are having sex, they are not sleeping'.

am I the only one annoyed by this?

2. It's because we're puritan idiots. Notice acts of violence are usually lovingly detailed in the...
..media but sexual relations, unless they are to be portrayed in some perverse light, are not. Hence, shit like "Sleeping with" instead of "having sex with". IMO, anyway.

18. Well, how do you explain the disparity between the level of violence...
Edited on Sat Sep-26-09 12:09 PM by Poll_Blind
...which is deemed acceptable in American media versus the level of sexuality deemed acceptable in same?

You can show a person being choked to death on a television show in America and, in a lot of ways, it's quite common especially on an evening drama. But showing a full shot of exposed buttocks or, for instance, even a woman breastfeeding (in which the breast is exposed, but obviously not for any sexual purposes) or depicting a woman receiving a mammogram (again, where the breast is exposed, but not for sexual purposes) is such a taboo?

I remember when Merideth Baxter Birney did a drama about a woman dealing with breast cancer, IIRC. And in the beginning of it there was a warning- soley because of her exposed breast. Which, I assure you, was not shown in any way which could be considered sexually exciting. And yet, so much violence is prepared and consumed for American audiences, even scenes which are very explicit, without the same warning.

My parents when talking about a girl who "got in trouble" would say "she slept with him" as if she carried all the "blame" for making a baby.

headache, dizziness, upset stomach, reduced semen. Stop taking Cialis immediately if you notice any changes or decrease in vision.

All you can do is sit in the tub and hope your sight returns when that shit wears off.

20. sexual love is a construct

you don't have to 'love' someone to have sex with them. Lust is the key word not love.

lust is not a construct.

30. I think there's a distinction of frequency and relationship. Sleeping indicates more intimacy.
This is my *CULTURAL* understanding of these terms. They're not the same.

You don't "sleep with" a hooker.

Did you have sex with that hooker? Yes.

Are you sleeping with her? HUH?

But when you're "seeing someone" on at least a semi-regular basis, it can be said you're sleeping with them.

Talking, I mean, not that other one.

Wouldn't news be more fun if they'd use "intercourse" instead of "talking"?

"President Obama said he hasn't given up and wants to try more intercourse with the GOP."

I don't know why they use that silly "sleeping with" language. Are we third graders?!

36. LOL...your age is showing.
I see a lot of teens and young adults and the term "sleeping with" never come into play. "hanging out," "hooking up," and just plain old "f***ing". They're much less euphemistic, though frankly I think they're less realistic about the ramifications. Of course, the ones I see are the ones for whom it's not going well.
