Oklahoma news anchor advocates censorship
On the eve of Banned Books Week, this anchor gives his "Two Cents" in blatant support for censorship of books in his local middle school (Norman Public Schools). He didn't even read the book in question! Video at the link (sorry, not sure how to embed)

1. This guy and other parents have no right
to tell my kid what she can or can't read. Or what she can handle when it comes to books. He says outright that no eleven, twelve or thirteen year old should be reading these very realistic (and awesome) teen books. My daughter is twelve and I WANT her to be reading about meth addiction so we can talk about it.

Please, if you care about this, if this makes you mad, send this guy a letter. Thanks.

2. They should just go one step further and burn books.

That way, they can never escape the label of being nazis. The anchorman should be sacked.

4. Kelly Ogle is one of the biggest reasons
that I stopped watching the local news. I can't stand that guy. He pisses me off.

7. Yes. It's bad here in East Texas too.

Wherever they burn books they will also, in the end, burn human beings.

13. Glass ...

While I am in no way defending Ogle's "two cents" crap, he's not outright calling for the banning of a book or books.

This all started because a middle school (6-8 or 7-9, not sure which this one is) was going to have Ellen Hopkins, the author, come speak to the students. Some parents who knew the books complained, and the talk was canceled. Ogle then goes further saying that the book itself is not appropriate for children of that age and shouldn't be in the school's library. (It is or was.)

The book is about meth abuse. It's quite hardcore.

Given the level of actual meth abuse in Oklahoma, I personally can't say that fiction warning of its dangers is not appropriate for kids that age. They see it in real life. All they have to do is walk down to the local 7-11 and watch the cookers come in to steal their ingredients to get a real-life picture of it ... or possibly just say "hi" to mom and dad in the morning.

By the standards of the harsh reality in OK, the book is rather tame.

10. To quote Eisenhower:
"DON'T JOIN THE BOOK BURNERS. Don't think you're going to conceal faults by concealing evidence that they ever existed. Don't be afraid to go in your library and read every book, as long as any document does not offend our own ideas of decency. That should be the only censorship."

If it offends YOU, then YOU don't read it. But don't go around and start telling others what they can and cannot read.

11. He's a joke
Kelly Ogle is a total dillweed. No one I know with half a brain takes anything he says seriously. He was a total Bush and Patriot Act apologist and makes me ashamed that he claims he's a journalist.

12. Ogle ...

... is an idiot and always has been.

Believe it or don't, this doesn't even approach the worst of his "two cents" segments.
