Obesity May Become Women's Top Cancer Cause
Obesity May Become Women's Top Cancer Cause

Cancer By Obesity Nearly Doubles In 5 Years
MARIA CHENG, AP Medical Writer

LONDON -- Being fat could become the leading cause of cancer in women in Western countries in the coming years, European researchers said Thursday.

Being overweight or obese accounts for up to 8 percent of cancers in Europe. Experts said that figure is poised to increase substantially as the obesity epidemic continues, and as major causes of cancer, such as smoking and hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women, drop dramatically.

"Obesity is catching up at a rate that makes it possible it could become the biggest attributable cause of cancer in women within the next decade," said Andrew Renehan, a cancer expert at the University of Manchester. Renehan presented his findings to a joint meeting of the European Cancer Organisation and the European Society for Medical Oncology in Berlin on Thursday.

Renehan and colleagues designed a model to estimate the number of cancers that could be blamed on being fat in 30 European countries. In 2002, they calculated that 70,000 cases of cancer out of about 2 million cancer cases were attributable to being overweight or obese. By 2008, the number had jumped to at least 124,000.

1. Well, gosh, blaming the woman for being fat certainly beats looking into environmental factors.
After all, that might cause a corporation to look bad.

4. Always said after smoking was obesity
Always someone out there trying to get people to change their lives - ok on a personal level and educational level, but eventually there will be those who want to write laws to limit choices.

After obesity they will do studies about how many kids and stress levels you have in life, your driving habits, etc and so on.

What the fundies could not accomplish through the church will be accomplished by mandating what is best for you and forcing you to live how others see as best for you.

7. i'm a breast cancer survivor
i am losing weight to increase my chance of staying cancer-free and alive. i am encouraging everyone i know (mostly women, 30-70+) to do the same thing. next to quitting smoking, losing weight is the best thing i can do for my health and well-being.

6. I gained six pounds last week..
The torrential rains we had here all week kept me off my bike, I was bored, out of money and my metabolism has been spiked by exercise so I sat at home and did little but eat my emergency rations which are basically things I had left over from before I changed my diet earlier this year.

I have lost nearly thirty pounds since the beginning of summer through aerobic exercise, in my case riding my bike, and carefully watching what I eat.

In the last two days I have ridden 37 miles and lost three pounds and my appetite is back under control again, vigorous regular exercise curbs my appetite I've found. I'm going to do a five mile recovery (easy) ride tomorrow and fifteen to twenty on Saturday. In another week I intend to lose all the weight I gained during the previous week of forced inactivity.

Yes, there are environmental and genetic factors that effect how hard it is for a given individual to lose weight but the two biggest factors are how much aerobic exercise you get and what you eat.

12. More congrats. Also, I just checked Mayo's web site
I was looking up whether the evidence is good enough yet
to say that Vitamin D is helpful in preventing breast cancer.
They gave the evidence a C, said
that more studies are needed. Oh well.

In the meantime, you seem to be doing what is best,
with side-benefits for your heart.

2. Why don't they take all the crap out of the food, then?
I am so sock of reading labels to see what has HFCS and other things that are contributing to this. Among the other lovely side effects of HFCS, it apparently doesn't send signals to the brain that you are full. So people keep eating.

Let's go after portion size, too. I just threw out half of what I got for lunch. It was way too big. I used to get burritos that were nice and small, and satisfying too. Now when I get a burrito, it's the size of a football, not to mention full of rice.

9. +1 Portion sizes drive me crazy. I always eat half of my meal at a restaurant and take the rest
home. It's a great way to save money and I don't have to cook.

I try to shop at stores that don't use trans fats and HFCS because I'm sick of being a food policewoman, too.

11. I try too. I don't care for leftovers, though
it's too bad, because I hate wasting food. I have started going to salad bars and bringing my lunch to get portion size down.

3. The "apple" figure ---
seems to be a cancer indicator. :( Something about fat in the abdominal area = high cancer risk. I am looking at a "pooch" that has been forming the last few years -- time to tame it! :scared:
