Serena Williams takes aim at "Mother Nature" in Tampax ad
Edited on Thu Sep-24-09 11:58 AM by undeterred
Serena Williams' new Tampax ad eerily reminiscent of her U.S. Open outburst
BY Matt Marrone DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Thursday, September 24th 2009

First she went after a U.S. Open lineswoman, now Serena Williams is taking aim at Mother Nature.

In a new ad campaign for Tampax's Pearl tampons, the tennis star uses her, um, "take-this-ball-and-shove-it" attitude to "Slam Mother Nature" - firing a forehand shot at the fictional character as she arrives with her "Monthly Gift."

The print advertisment - which will launch next month in teen magazines and women's lifestyle publications, along with a series of online videos, reads: "Serena Williams isn't about to let Mother Nature's Monthly Gift ruin her game." Williams' approach in the ad is eerily similar to the way she tried to stop a bad call from ruining her game in Flushing earlier this month, when she screamed at a line judge, "I swear to God, I'll f --- take this ball and shove it down your f --- throat" after she was called for a phantom foot fault.

The subsequent code violation for her tirade came on match point, resulting in a loss to eventual champion Kim Clijsters - and a public relations nightmare for the defending U.S. Open champ.

3. That's certainly not how I picture Mother Nature...

...more like those Imperial Margarine Commercials of the 1970's. People will see this and say, WTF? Get ready for another PR nightmare.

13. Chiffon Margarine, not Imperial

I always thought she was still too "fairy godmother" to be Mother Nature, but she was a damned sigh better than the Stepford wife looking one in the Tampax ads.

The ones that infuriate me are the ones that say "Have a happy period!" Yeah, right. That HAD to have been written by an unmarried man with no women in his life. If he really knew any woman he'd have known how asinine that comment is.

4. I think the ads were in the works before the "incident"
but it certainly adds emphasis. These ads are going to be in magazines for teenaged girls.
