Sanford again vows to fight on (He needs to be committed not impeached)
Gov. Mark Sanford said Wednesday he won't resign, will fight any attempt at impeachment and believes he may have his best chance next year at pushing for government restructuring.

Sanford also spoke at length about how his life has been simplified with his political future being erased.
<snip>
In a wide-ranging interview, Sanford also said:

- Any violations of law found by an ongoing State Ethics Commission investigation would be "technical" ones and he will fight any attempt by legislators to use those to oust him from office.

- People are listening to him more now because of the scandal and he wants to "harness that for good."

- He doesn't believe the scandal has damaged his credibility in selling the state to business prospects because businesses care more about the bottom line and the incentive packages.

- The state is working hard at economic development and officials have negotiated on some pending deals "that may or may not happen."

- His resignation or impeachment would be bad for the state because it would mean two government transitions in the 15 months remaining in his term. His effort at staying in office is about what's best for the state, not about what's best for him.

"If I thought it was best for the state to have moved on, I would have left a long time ago," he said.

The only restructuring Sanford is being allowed to do is rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

He is worse than fire ants and Kudzu combined, and harder to get rid of.

4. He won't go to heaven or hell.
Neither God nor Satan could withstand his perpetual explaining. They will probably sign a treaty to keep him in a neutral sound proof place.

8. It is.
He's the only person I know who practices digging holes. I'm sure there is some psychological significance to this, but I refuse to try to untangle his "mind." He is a living monument to Escher.

5. Yeah, the dude's definitely gone mental
This business of wrapping everything he used to criticize in an aura of nobility has got to be draining every spare bit of energy in his psyche. Like Mr Creosote, I think one more "thin little wafer" of calumny to his reputation will make him explode.

I hope they keep the pressure on him. Maybe we'll get treated to an armed standoff, with a SWAT team trying to pull the governor out of his bunkerized sniper's nest office.

9. Seems To Be Just Fine With The Folks In SC...
We had a corrupt governor who didn't want to go, but go he did...the state legislature impeached him as the pressure on politicians, specificially Democrats, made it happen. It's what the voters of this state wanted and it was done quickly. Blago was gone to the reality TV show world he belongs in (with Sanford and several others). Guess the folks in South Carolina don't find Sanford's antics that bad or at least bad enough even to begin the process.

That suits me fine...Sanford is yet another boat anchor and embarassment to the rushpublican party...the longer he stays the more he reminds people of how inept, corrupt and morally disengenous many rushpublicans are.

12. It's not fine to most people here.
The whole thing is an effing mess that is also tied into the upcoming election for a new Governor. Even the Democrats here don't want him, but are divided over whether it helps or hurts to leave him in office.

He is so willing to dig in and fight it with every means within reach that digging him out would take a major effort and probably a lot of money.

If they impeach him, he will go to court so many times that he'd make Orly Taitz look like a slacker. Do you remember his fight about taking the stimulus money? That is nothing compared to what he would do in a fight to oust him.

It might literally come down to him physically taken out by the authorities.

We need him gone because he is deluded if he thinks anybody will work with him to do anything. Moving him out will though will take up the entire legislative session.

It is Catch-22.

13. I Don't Blame The Democrats Here...
From my knowledge, the Democrats have no power in your state...this is a rushpublican affair through and through. Thus as the old adage goes, when your nemesis is hanging themselves, give 'em more rope.

It's a shame that one person can amass so much power as shut an entire state down. So let him sue...he'd be doing it from the outside and one would think that his antics and evidence presented at an impeachment trial would be a powerful weapon in a court of law. Let Sanford sue until he goes broke and then goes away.

Looks more like there are those who keep hoping he'll either go away on his own or their letting him play out the clock...put up with his shit as he'll be gone in another year. In the meantime there's no reason the legislature can't strip him of power and/or the ability to spend...make him a lame duck. The real Catch-22 is that the rushpublicans are caught in their own hypocrisy box.

14. The only power he has is being in office.
We have one of the weakest executive branches in the nation. The first thing he did when he took office was poke the legislature in the eye. They are Republicans and they hate him. He is really a Libertarian.

The legislature passes bills. He usually vetoes them. Then they override his veto. He has gotten much worse as time has gone by.

He essentially gets in the way, and people go around him.

Reforming the way the branches of government are structured was one of the priorities of a lot of people. However, Sanford has probably set that process back by a brazillion years. The thought that Sanford or someone like him will ever have more power gives everybody the willies.

The leaders of the Democratic Party in this state need to be thrown out. They have been leading the party for over 30 years, and they have lead it downhill. They are ineffective and are just protecting their little fiefdom.

15. Looks Like CYA All Over...
You'd think if the executive is so weak and there's vote to override vetos there should be votes to impeach. It shows how inept the politicians are if they are easily intimidated.

But there may be some sunshine in this all. One would hope the longer this kabuki theater rolls on the more open voters will be to make wholescale changes. Politicians are lazy by nature...they won't do heavy lifting unless there's external pressure and this has to come from the voters.

The question boils down to if people are fed up and want change. That means rebuilding both parties with fresh faces and ideas. Hopefully there are folks like you that will rise to that challenge.

Cheers...

11. He is not afraid to fight for what he believes in.
Specifically, his belief that South Carolina owes him a paycheck and free air travel.
