Rove Left Out Of Bush's Push To Reach Compromise On Immigration Bill - Novak
Sorry about the Novakula attribution, but...

<snip>

The White House is letting it be known on Capitol Hill that top presidential adviser Karl Rove will play no part in President Bush's forthcoming big push to pass a compromise immigration bill.

Rove, renowned as architect of Bush's 2000 and 2004 elections, was named deputy chief of staff at the beginning of the second term and assigned additional duties dealing with issues beyond politics. However, he has been under intensive attack this year in the Democratic-controlled Congress with demands that he be subpoenaed to testify under oath about the firing of eight U.S. attorneys.

Consequently, he probably would not be helpful in trying to find a middle ground on the immigration problem, which will require bipartisan cooperation.

So what are they saying here? "We'll leave Rove back at the Death Star when we come to negotiate on immigration???"

Is he losing favor, or just being taken off the table for this particular chess move?

:shrug:

1. Rove does not talk to Dems
To him Democratic congresscritters are the enemy.

He will not talk, nor will he negotiate with the enemy.

2. Something's up. The Seattle paper noted something interesting about it, too-
But what may have been most striking about the 30-minute speech by the man whose career has been defined by the arc of George W. Bush's political fortunes is that the president merited little mention.

When Rove appeared before King County Republicans three years ago, his speech was peppered with intimate behind-the-scenes moments to build a character sketch of the president.

6. I vote for b) the chess move
Rove's being kept out as a gesture of "goodwill". Chess move. Nothing more.
