Tomorrow is World Car Free Day
Post your pathetic excuses for not participating here.

Or

Post your smug sanctimonious pronouncement that your are participating and therefore are a better person than the rest of us slobs.

Or just read the link and give some thought to how we get around in this big old goofy world.

43. do they deliver?
Not kidding. I live in a rural area so I have a 40 mpg Civic, and bike to my office in town sometimes. No Petsmart for 50 miles or more. Dollar General and Family Dollar have a lot more stuff than I thought - so even the 36 mile round trip to Walmart is rare. And that's ALWAYS combined with other errands.

Let's all remember this "DAY" is symbolic. We can all find ways to drive less and after all, "studies show" that Americans are doing just that!

Good for us!

I live on a dirt road in the middle of the woods, 20 miles from the nearest "big city". I didn't know that tomorrow is "no car day", so if I have to go out for any reason, I need to take a car because I can't fly.

I know...pretty thoughtless and selfish of me not to have taken levitation or astral projection lessons, but that's just the way I am.

38. You ARE trapped
Even busy suburbia has no decent public trans. Where I grew up you had to hoof it MILES into downtown to catch a bus that runs once an hour and only travels the one main road. It's no different today. Where I live now is also no different and I DO live a very short walk to the main drag... but you can't walk to anywhere within miles to get a half gallon of milk and a pack of smokes.

In case you're seriously late to the party, public transportation SUCKS ASS in this country and it's hardly just people that live in rural areas. How fortunate for you that apparantly you get to live in one of the grossly limited areas where public transportation is accessable any time at all hours and is safe not only to use but to get to and from.

39. Try to wrap your mind around what it's like living out in the country.
I guess I could hitchhike if I really had to. Or, I could also ride a bike about 8 miles to a bus, downhill all the way, and uphill all the way back home. But people drive like maniacs along this road, and it looks like a miserable bike ride.

I've gone for years without a vehicle, when I lived in the city. I look forward to not having a vehicle again someday, when I live in a city again. So, maybe you're presuming that everyone has other options..?

It's one lane each way, hairpin turns, hilly, and people routinely drive 60+ mph. Just about every year, there is a fatal accident. But, it is scenic!

34. hour commute - no public trans
Even if there were public transportation to where I work I don't get out of work until about 3:30 a.m. unless I'm doing an earlier shift. Besides, I'm a stripper and taking public transportation to and from work is extreamly dangerous, and I know of no club that allows it. There's a big reason why we are escorted to our cars by security and they watch us leave... but sometimes some disgusting creep will follow us anyway. No fucking way I'd take public trans for this job even if the club were a few blocks away.

42. I don't get to stay home from work because it's "car free day."
My students, and my principal, would not appreciate it.

Car free isn't an option in my rural area, unless the county wants to build some roads where no cars, trucks, bicycles, etc. are allowed. Then I could ride my horse, or teach my horse to pull a cart. Of course, I'd have to have someplace at work to keep the horse until it was time to go home.

Meanwhile, I'll stick to driving. I'm thrifty. I make sure that all errands happen on the way home from work, and I rarely drive anywhere on weekends. My idea of recreation is to stay home and read or ride my horses. I'm only on the road on weekends when connecting with local family members.

Laziness.

That's what's wrong with this country.

On a somewhat less snarky note; people need to get over their fears if it's preventing them from living life the way they want to live.

Flying in an airplane scares me, so I just take a Valium before flights. Do the same thing on a bicycle and you'll be fine.

Trust me.

69. It's supposed to hit 100F+ tommorow.

70. Just when I thought I'd run out of excuses for calling in "sick"

I'll pass - the only other way to get to work at 6:30 AM is to start hiking at 4 AM, along an unlit, windy mountain road with fast-moving traffic and no shoulder to speak of. And no, it's not an excuse - because I'm not asking for one and don't need one.

73. Can't you just attach a bunch of helium balloons to the palm trees?
Do I have to do all the thinking around here?
