U.S. Attorney Steven M. Biskupic on Saturday denied any connection between his prosecution of Georgia Thompson and the appearance of Biskupic's name on a Justice Department list of U.S. attorneys targeted for firing.
Biskupic said he learned of the list only after the dismissal of eight U.S. attorneys and long after the decision was made to prosecute Thompson, a state purchasing supervisor whose conviction was overturned by a federal appeals court this month. Biskupic said he prosecuted Thompson "in consultation" with Wisconsin's then-Democratic Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager and Dane County District Attorney Brian Blanchard, also a Democrat.
"I had absolutely no knowledge that my job was in jeopardy at any time" during the Thompson prosecution, said Biskupic, who has denied being pressured by Republican leaders locally or in Washington, D.C., to file charges in political cases.
"I had no knowledge of the list until it was reported publicly."
