More of my hero Keith's pettiness
Besides his obsession with Anderson Cooper's outting himself,

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=389&topic_id=629313

this past week Keith Olbermann made the following statement:

From the other side of the pond, the actress Kirsten Dunst lighting up her personality and a little more, telling a British newspaper that she is a moderate drinker, has tried some drugs, while she is not a, quote, major smoker, she really likes marijuana. Quoting, “I have never been a major smoker, but I think America‘s view on weed is ridiculous. I mean, are you kidding me? If everyone smoked wee, the world would be a better place.”

She also said her best friend‘s father, the late astronomer Carl Sagan, was the biggest pot smoker in the world, and he was a genius. Miss Dunst, I knew Carl Sagan. Carl Sagan he taught at my school. You‘re no Carl Sagan. All of this would explain the billions and billions of stars that he saw with or without a telescope.

That was fucking uncalled for too! He takes a swing at MJ and Carl Sagan at the same time?!!?

Arrrrrrrrrrrgh! My hero has flaws!

1. Was Carl's smoking related to the disease that killed him ?

Did he use it to treat symptoms ?

2. MJ? Who is that? And if Sagan smoked pot, more power to him.
What's really your point, if someone smokes weed they are immediately discounted?
Your hero?

if so, he doesn't know his audience.

9. Absolutely. He'd rather NOT do it, but he's forced to. My dad loves KO,
but hates the last part of his hour; so do I. Dan Abrams needs to rethink that.

22. We watch the first 3 or 4 stories and off goes the TV.
We leave after the "Worst Person" segment. The rest of his show is silly and does not belong within a program that says it is a news show. Yes, Abrams needs to think that segment over. I'm sure Keith would agree. I enjoy his show and believe he is one of the best out there but improvements need to be made.

Well, actually my wife makes me change the channel. She especially thinks the OddBall segment is often racist and always stupid. Luckily it's about the same time the Colbert re-run starts.

35. We tape Jon Stewart and Colbert at 11PM the night before.
They become our hour programming before Keith starts at 8PM. After Countdown, it is off to bed for these old-timers. Sometimes a good book for a while beats TV by a mile.

38. Carl Sagan was my childhood hero...
I was quite the geek and dreamed of a career as an astronomer all the way until I dropped out of college. I had no idea he smoked pot. If I had been able to complete my degree, we would have been two peas in a pod.

KO is a pulpit figure that is vicariously placed within a regulated audience that is actively manipulated by the corporate fuckwads controlling the seriousness and integrity of his message. He, himself, is a beacon of light. It is a travesty that his keepers continually attempt to belittle his worth.

25. Yeah. Personally I have no problem with it when Keith takes a swipe at pot smokers
when they act as if they are superior to everyone else in the universe just because they smoke.

That's just the kind of pretentiousness he enjoys nipping in the, ah, bud.

And those who claim to turn off the whole second half of his show are missing some pretty good news stories, not to mention the occasional Special Comment.

39. I don't smoke anything anymore- not for a very long time- but I'm more convinced than ever
that it should be legal, and that the "war on drugs" is a sham.

Given that we spend hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars trying to convince kids that everyone who smokes pot either ends up date raped, dead, or stuck on mom's couch for 30 years, I think it's worthwhile to remind people that there ARE successful, intelligent folks who recreationally smoke pot with no problem the way some people are able to drink recreationally and safely.

26. If Keith's biggest flaw were that he projected the attitude that people who smoke lots of pot
are dumb stoners, I could live with it.

Really, I'd rather see him lay off Anderson Cooper, because other people's sexual orientation is none of his business.

37. Unless Anderson Cooper starts speaking at anti-gay marriage rallies, I agree with you.
In any case, Anderson Cooper is a relatively benign and polished news reader.

I don't care if he's straight or gay or has devoted himself to sexually pleasuring a huge bowl of Jello pudding.

Nice way to get a reference to Sagan's pot smoking and Kirsten Dunst's comments into his show, without seemingly endorsing them and not blasting them. K.O. is walking the tightrope, right now, and doing an admirable job.

It was a Daily Show/Colbert Report type of joke.

Even without seeing the segment, knowing KO's approach, it fits. He's making fun of the gossip mill that is shocked - SHOCKED! I tell you - that Mary Jane smokes Mary Jane, or that Mary Jane makes a difference in our evaluation of billions and billions.

36. Carl Sagan was very open about his marijuana usage. I don't think it was a swipe.
And as for what he said about Kirsten Dunst... by Hollywood gossip standards, that was a "good-natured ribbing."

Compare that to watching David Spade's show on Comedy Central.

This is the filler-fluff that Keith uses to steal Bill O'Reilly's audience for the last half hour each night (and it's been working).

This is why Keith beats Falafel King in the last half-hour of his show each night. They tune-in to watch Keith taking shots at the "liberal Hollywood Elite" that Captain Phonesex rants about all the time.

You can't get Republickers to watch a TV show in which someone isn't in SOME way being attacked.
