I had no idea what this thread was about. I searched and found the video. Sorry, but the ACORN worker was highly offensive. The "pimp" was playing a role, but Sonja actually thought she was participating in child prostitution, and eagerly gave advice. No way to make that look good.

in the videos I saw. The footage in the office only showed the Acorn employee or employees. All of the shots of the pimp/hooker were outside shots or appeared to be filmed separately. That was my impression but I've only given the videos a cursory glance.

and not a few pimps. NONE of them look anything like that -- they're usually a lot more skelly and unappetizing. The fact they pulled this off is kind of amazing.

I think ACORN is a decent organization -- I even volunteered to make some campaign calls for them awhile back. But they are centered in the ghetto, and inevitably become involved with people with the wrong mentality. Drug dealing and prostitution are commonplace and discussed openly in certain groups and neighborhoods.

The fact that the imposters were white and seemingly middle-class adds an intrguing angle to it. I would guess it made it more difficult for the ACORN person to identify them as imposters, because as far as they know a lot of white people from the suburbs look that way. I also wonder whether there was a sense in which the workers were being protective and trying to keep the inexperienced young white folks out of trouble. The workers were complete idiots, had low moral standards, and should never have represented ACORN in that way, but in some sense I wonder if in their own minds they were being charitable and trying to help the people who were scamming them.

Hard to explain, but it puts things in a different light for me.

and I don't doubt that at all. If you have links or any other information, please forward. You can't take reports like this at face value.

I think a lot of the critics are missing the entire culture that this emerges from. 80% of anything anyone says is complete bullshit -- 90% if they act like those doofuses. The police are not a force for good. Giving people advice on how to avoid arrest is considered a charitable thing to do. Unless asked, you stay out of other people's business especially if it's illegal.

It is deeply compromising to operate in such an environment, and it is not surprising that some ACORN workers acted as enablers. But the scammers may also have misinterpreted some of what they heard.

In some sense, I applaud them for finding this weakness and exploiting it. It's a dirty trick but it is has been remarkably effective and has exposed a real problem, even if it's being misinterpreted.
