Why the sense of foreboding?
Another place on this page is a poll about how people feel about the future, politically. The majority of people that have responded have said they have a feeling of foreboding. Is this feeling any more unhealthy than the feelings of fear and unpredictability we experienced during the Bush years? Or is it just a continuation of those feelings?

We were looking for change not just because we wanted it but because we needed it. Now, we seem to see the change slipping through our hands? That reality is very uncomfortable.

What is the best way to cope with that sense of foreboding? Do we simply surrender? For example, do we just give up on the "public option"? Or do we steel ourselves for the long fight? I would suggest we hang together and fight for what we believe and that purpose will defeat the foreboding feeling? If we are feeling this way, think of how the "tea-baggers" must be feeling? They must be feeling very afraid and desperate about the future. At least, their actions and words indicate that is the case?

Let's hang together folks. Even if we have to fight our own Party. And that makes it very difficult when you not only have to fight the Republicans, but you have to fight a good number of "Blue Dogs" and so-called "moderate" Democrats. That is the decision we need to make.

1. Seeing the GOP/corporatists using hot button words to stir violence is part of MY bad 'tude.
They are trying to inspire some assassins. It is worse than the crap the fundy sites did to get shooters going after clinic workers and doctors. We KNOW that shit worked.

2. For me the sense of foreboding
is because of the blatant racism and hate that is on display.

5. I think it was H. L. Mencken that said
Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public. After seeing all the birthers and teabaggers I'd say he was right

6. Remember the "law of attraction"
and think good thoughts. If we do, good will come back.

7. i was born in '56,
and it occurred to me today how dramatically different this nation is from its state at any time in the past. The currently estimated 20% right-wing, reactionary citizenry was, in my memory, the dominant force, the seat of power, the 80%; and 20% were identified as a liberal minority, for good reason: the prevailing culture was, even during the administrations of Carter and Clinton, vapid and right-leaning, male and white. The scales have flipped. The fact is that a liberal majority exists now in our government, as well as in our culture. Consider the advances in visual art, music, writing, and film, all of which, in my view, far outshine and overreach the aesthetics of the past. I think that the Republican party is over, if for no other reason than they have no artists in their ranks--even '40s Germany had their Leni Riefenstal--and they are left with a population without imagination and without endurance: a weak, expiring sort of American, who threatens subversion with weapons, rather than ideas. There is no going back to the past now, which is a bit scary even to me, heartened by this change, because the base of power has shifted with the hearty election of a brilliant man with clear brown eyes and skin, unthinkable--unimaginable--when I was younger, like two years ago. Rough times might be ahead, but they will not be a repeat of the past.

8. Having a feeling of foreboding doen't mean disbelieving it is good to hang together or fight.
These things are not mutually exclusive. If people are asked their honest feelings and they are in return honest in their replies, then I don't believe they should be criticized for it or dismissed with trite pep talk words.

I am unapologetic in declaring that I have a sense of foreboding, and I am more than willing and will be happy to be completely wrong.

9. I'm sorry it was taken that way..
I, too, have that same sense of foreboding. I was trying to figure out how best to cope with it. Sorry for any suggestions I might have made. I did not mean for it to be a "pep talk", only a word of encouragement.
