48. Democracy Reborn 11:24pm
not on the schedule.

it's good.

Review

“The Civil War amendments redeemed the Constitution from the slavery concessions that had betrayed its preamble and perpetuated human bondage both North and South. Garrett Epps’ new book is indispensable reading for Americans to know how our constitutional history has affected us all. A combination of the finest scholarship with unsurpassed insight.”—William Van Alstyne, Perkins Professor of Law emeritus, Duke University; Lee Professor of Constitutional Law, College of William and Mary

"Garret Epps is one of our best legal historians, and he has produced a fascinating book on the creation and impact of the 14th Amendment. The people who wrote our Constitution were America's original Founders, but the amazing group that produced the 14th Amendment were like our second wave of Founders, helping our nation be reborn into the democracy it is today."—Walter Isaacson, author, Benjamin Franklin: An American Life

“It is best to be blunt. This is a thrilling book. Garrett Epps has woven together the tragic strands of America's effort to deal with the issue of race in the Constitution. Law, politics and statecraft clash in a great drama.”—Anthony Lewis, author of Gideon’s Trumpet

“Garrett Epps is one of the most fluid and accessible writers in the legal academy. Not surprisingly, he has written a marvelous overview of immediate post-Civil War politics that gave us the Fourteenth Amendment and, as importantly, a new understanding of the American experiment.”—Sanford Levinson, University of Texas Law School, author of Our Undemocratic Constitution: How the Constitution Goes Wrong (and How We the People Can Correct It)

53. A Short Filler Program: Hal Crowther, "Gather at the River"
Hal Crowther, "Gather at the River"--This was a short BookTV feature interview, only about 17-18 minutes, between other programs, and played twice, I think. If the level of thinking of the book is the same as the program, this sounds like a really good book. The topics went from publishing and attitudes of publishers to the level of decline of newspapers and their writing, to the South as it is now, to politics and social criticism.

Hal Crowther has been a columnist for magazines, and an essayist for books, for many years, the last 20 or so, from Los Angeles, until returning to the South some years ago. Coming back after years being away gave a clear perspective, on both the changes and problems of the South, and condescending New York City publishing world attitudes toward the South. One publisher could not even think of the name of one great Southern writer, (not even Truman Capote, apparently), and another was a story of a woman writer who came down and made a study of the South and its culture, and was so ignorant and arrogant, that it became an angry chapter of the book. There was also a part of the discussion about how if you are going to make serious social criticism or be confrontational, you have to do it with humor, or it was very hard to take, as writing.

There were great slams of Jesse Helms and the "completely useless" "rubber stamp" Elizabeth Dole, who has accomplished no legislation of any note the whole time she has been there, and other fun opinions like that. The part of the program discussing the frightening decline of print journalism, and the apparent near end of the newspaper as an institution, was serious and important. The money is not there, writers are not supported by management anymore, the good students do not choose newspapers as job choices, but prefer other media first, and so the best and most creative writers are not going into newspapers anymore, etc. There was a part of the discussion on the great damage to the language, and to politics and public service, of the now-pervasive effect of the public-relations consultant; scary, and perceptive. Quoting a New York Times story where apparently Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama referred to crowds around tham as "fans," and not citizens, part of a discussion on the degradation of politics to entertainment and themselves as "stars," and the fact that the reporter never noticed the problem, made me want to read that essay. This was a great program from a really smart social critic, and I think the book would also be great.
