Class: Obama responds to Wilson

In a pool spray following his meeting with Cabinet officials Thursday, President Obama said he accepted Rep. Joe Wilson's ...

... (R-S.C.) apology for his outburst in the House chamber Wednesday night.

"Yes, I do," Obama said. "He apologized quickly."

"I do think that, as I said last night, we have to get to the point where we can have a conversation about big important issues that matter to the American people without vitriol," Obama continued. "I hope that some of the fever breaks a little bit."

Asked if he would talk to Wilson, Obama smiled: "I talk to everybody."

3. This is no way to treat bullies ... it's only inviting more hate.
No longer can he truly deflect because the GOP is in full knuckle-dragging fevered mode.

No, it's only going to get worse.

It's going to get REAL ugly.

4. I wonder how someone as clueless as you manages to dress themself in the morning

What Obama was doing there is typically called "Grace Under Pressure"... or "Killing them with kindness".

You have no Political IQ at all. The response you want from Obama is EXACTLY what the GOP wants.

He won't... simply WILL NOT... be dragged down to their level.

And the average American voter sees that in examples like this.

The rightwing often use the phrase "What Would Jesus Do?"

It sickens them, deep down, that Obama exhibits the answer to that question instead of just giving it lip service.

5. I wonder how someone as RUDE as you looks themselves in the mirror each morning?

We all get DRAGGED DOWN when Obama will not stand up to the *insane* right wing republicans.

This is not post-partisan politics. This is Obama "knowing his place" and placing us all as targets.

At some point, President Obama MUST turn around and say "ENOUGH!," then call them out on his lies in a blunt manner.

UNTIL he gets tough with the crazies, it's only going to get more VILE and potentially VIOLENT.

No, coddling bullies is not defense and deflection can only go so far.

8. He acted like a President. Which is why he *IS* President.

Politicians that act the way you describe do not get very far.

They fire up the 30% that are true believers, and turn EVERYBODY else off.

Obama's demeanor is the demeanor of a leader. You don't recognize it, because you don't know what leadership looks like.

9. No, he can't continue to deflect as it's getting UGLY in the trenches.

An EFFECTIVE leader does not constantly deflect and "play pretend."

Sooner or later he's going to have to bluntly put them in their place.

15. he put them on notice last night- that's part of what provoked
wilson's outburst.

Pres. Obama doesn't have to become like wilson - wilson is going to have to become more like Pres. Obama- we can spiral down that familiar, ugly, tired old way, or we can CHOOSE- as Pres. Obama has, to BE what we know is the right way to be, and the way we would like others to be. Nothing is gained when "we" become "them" except that "they" win the most important struggle.

19. Jeez, wake up!
Let Big O take the high road in the public eye. We've already screwed Wilson for him, with donations to his campaign opponent. And don't think that vindictive viper Rahm will forget the incident anytime soon.

11. I understand how you feel. I say, though, that we let him stay above the fray
and that WE have to do the pushback. We already have. You had a great post this morning about conduct unbecoming an officer. There have been threads with the Repub rules committee info so that we could let them know what we think. And, best of all, we're raising money for Miller, Wilson's challenger.

There may come a time when Obama has to respond forcefully to the Millers of this world, but I think that last night's speech would be sullied if he showed anger today. That's just my opinion and I totally respect your take on it. :hi:

16. I think President Obama handled it as the masterful chess player that he is
On the other hand, if it were me I would have called for Wilson to be ejected

18. The outburst was born out of fear and desperation
It was a display of weakness, not strength. He's an insignifant little pissant. Let's not turn him into a right wing hero by popping veins over what amounts to a 3 year old throwing a tantrum.
