He is, unfortunately, the congressman for my district in Texas. After seeing him with the sign that said "What Bill?" tonight I became enraged. I emailed him just now. I know it will fall on deaf ears, but at least I feel better.
This is what wrote:
Mr. Gohmert,
Imagine my surprise to see your face on the television while watching President Obama’s speech tonight to the joint session of Congress. After a quick check on the internet, I confirmed that the congressman with the sign and off-putting expression was, in fact, you.
We are ideologically opposed on the majority of issues. On health care reform and your actions tonight I am not only opposed to your position, I am disgusted. The sign you proudly held in your lap asked “What Bill?” You may have thought that your sign held a deep ideological meaning. I saw it at as a sign reminiscent of Alfred E Newman – “What, Me Worry?”
What bill? A bill that provides access to affordable health insurance for all America’s citizens, just as you, a member of Congress has. A bill that prevents insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions. This should be a bill that you, as a Christian, could support.
All too frequently I see you being swept up in a frenzy of hate and ignorance. The few, fringe members of your party have made it their mission to roadblock any progression in this country. That same fringe questioned the validity of President Obama’s birth certificate. On July 29, 2009 you became a cosponsor of H.R. 1503 – a “birther” bill written by Rep Posey of Florida.
This is a time for progress, not politics. Enough is enough. Please support your uninsured and underinsured constituents by supporting healthcare reform.
Sincerely,
LT TX
